10 installations at i Light Marina Bay 2017 that will spark THE FEELS

Need something fun to do in March? Singapore’s leading sustainable light festival, i Light Marina Bay, is back with 20 new art installations and three exciting festival hubs, including an eye-catching inflatable playground zoo.

What is it about flickering lights? Despite the heavy rain, we were able to catch some of the installations at the media preview on Wednesday night, and let’s just say that these glowing artworks filled us with an odd mixture of melancholy and awe, undercut only by an impulse to Instagram story EVERYTHING. #MustInspireFOMO

Keep reading to see the 10 installations that gave us “the feels”, and catch the (mostly free!) festival for yourself between March 3 to 26 at Marina Bay Waterfront.

MoonFlower

Location: The Promontory

This field of 800 luminescent flowers was by far the most breathtaking installation, thanks to its scope and its inherent poetry (we can’t be the only ones who recalled William Wordsworth’s poem about daffodils). Not only is each flower powered by solar-powered LEDs, but you can “adopt” one from the garden for a minimum of $5, with all proceeds going to the Garden City Fund.

This place is great for….
Wandering lonely as a cloud (that floats on high o’er vales and hills).

Suggested Instagram caption:
Shamelessly syrupy quote about flowers being there for you in times of joy and times of sorrow.

Hybycozo

Location: Esplanade waterfront, beside Gluttons’ Bay

What do you get when you combine geometry, Islamic tiles, and The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy? You get these sculptures, whose gently pulsing colours and intricate patterns will mesmerise anyone who gazes upon them.

This place is great for…
The mathematically-minded.

Suggested Instagram caption:

Secret Galaxies

Location: ArtScience Museum, Marina Bay Sands

While this isn’t the first time that the ArtScience Museum has served as a canvas for a light display, this year’s cosmic installation will tickle your inner astronomy geek.

This place is great for…
Nerds, couples who have always wanted to study the night sky, but who have had no opportunity because #lightpollution

Suggested Instagram caption:
“ArtScience Museum is LIT tonight.”

Home

Location: Waterfront Promenade

“Home”, which was inspired by children’s drawings, provides a welcome bit of simplicity amidst the concrete jungle.

This place is great for…
Wefies with your kids, or if you are childless, the ~squad~.

Suggested Instagram caption:
“Home is wherever I’m with you <3”

Horizontal Interface

Location: Mist Walk

You’d think that a psychedelic chord construction would overcrowd our skyline, but the throng of neon wires, which emit a pleasant rustling sound, gives the area a moody, perhaps musical quality.

(Okay, okay, so it also reminds us of those colourful plastic rattan chairs, but not in a bad way.)

This place is great for…
CBD workers partaking in a bit of after-work exercise. Nothing like a striking new backdrop to make your route a little less repetitive.

Suggested Instagram caption:
“Spent my night run chasing the rainbow!!!”

I Light You So Much

Location: The Promontory

Despite its resemblance to spiders, this kinetic installation was actually inspired by bamboo – as it is believed to store positive energy – and moves in reaction to the wind, thus symbolizing the “hidden energy in the presence of light.” Or perhaps the hidden appeal of creepy crawlies?

This place is great for…
Trolling your arachnophobic friends.

Suggested Instagram caption:
1. For the punny: “I really, really, really, really light you.”

2. For the aforementioned arachnaphobics, Ron Weasley’s classic, “Why spiders? Why couldn’t it be ‘follow the butterflies’?”

The Colorful Garden of Light

Location: Clifford Square

That being said, Clifford Square actually does contain a tree full of butterflies amidst several dazzling stalks of peonies.

This place is great for…
Fans of Alice in Wonderland.

Suggested Instagram caption:
“Imagination is the only weapon in the war against reality.” By Lewis Carroll, of course.

Northern Lights

Location: Waterfront promenade

This Swedish-made installation, which was inspired by – what else – the aurora borealis, plays a “light story” through 1000 vertically positioned light lines. It’s not the real thing, but it’s pretty darn hypnotic all the same.

This place is great for…
Inspiring your significant other to book a trip to Scandinavia so you can catch the real thing.

Suggested Instagram caption:
Honestly, we’re pretty much out of lyrics already, so “in light” of their upcoming concert, go ahead and use Coldplay’s classic “lights will guide you home.”

You Lookin’ At Me?

Location: Waterfront promenade

Equal parts silly and creepy, these giant flickering eyeballs stood out as one of the most memorable installations at iLight (or EYELight) Marina Bay.

This place is great for…
Lord of the Rings fans, goths.

Suggested Instagram caption:
"Hello darkness my old friend."

The Body of the Sea:

Location: Merlion Park

It’s not every day that you see the Merlion all “dressed up”, which is why we loved seeing the iconic sculpture ebb with marine visuals.

This place is great for…
Rediscovering your love for Singapore. It’s hard to gaze upon this vista without feeling a renewed sense of fondness for our fair city.

Suggested Instagram caption:
“Just here for the ‘gram.” (Yeah, yeah, as if you’re too cool to visit the Merlion.)

BONUS: Art-Zoo

While Art-Zoo isn’t one of the installations, this ticketed festival hub is both artwork and playground, featuring an array of inflatable animals ensconced in an illuminated garden.
