These haunted locales made us scream for mercy at Halloween Horror Nights 7

No matter where you go at Halloween Horror Nights 7, you’re going to run into a ghost, ghoul, or the undead. That’s something we found out the hard way at the media preview on Monday night (Sep 25), where only the toilets provided some respite from the cackling creatures, which include snarling Santas and slashed-up KPop stars.

This year’s theme revolves around 7 so-called modern-day deadly sins: Cruelty, Deception, Malice, Obsession, Perversion, Manipulation, and Narcissism. Despite sounding like Urban Decay eyeshadow names, these sins manifest themselves a number of gruesome ways, which you can experience firsthand in one of the five haunted houses or two scare zones. There are also two shows, for those who prefer watching horrors unfold at a distance, and zombie laser tag, which uses brainwave technology to help you unlock clues. Not an easy feat when you’re being hunted for your braaaiiinsss…

So without further ado, here are 5 of the most chilling encounters we had at Halloween Horror Nights 7.

Resorts World Sentosa Universal Studios Singapore’s Halloween Horror Nights runs for 14 select nights across five weekends (29 September to 29 October). Standard event tickets cost $68, with an additional cost of $38 to enjoy the zombie laser tag experience. Visit the Halloween Horror Nights website to learn more.

Undead shoppers

Where: Death Mall Haunted House
Deadly sin: Malice

What’s scarier than shoving your way through the crowds at a heartland shopping centre? Shoving your way through when everyone around you is dead. As if sales-hungry shoppers weren’t grouchy enough, the ghosts within the Death Mall seek revenge on the store’s owner, as none of them ever expected to die while queueing for groceries.

Scariest part: Ghosts preparing sushi. Malicious spirits with choppers are never a welcome sight.

Demented holiday creatures

Where: Happy Horror Days Scare Zone
Deadly sin: Perversion

The Happy Horror Days Scare Zone presents a twisted take on everyone’s favourite holidays. Like The Nightmare Before Christmas, but without the loveable characters or charming songs. Instead, you can wander through a maze festooned with dismembered body parts, or dodge leprechauns thirsting for human flesh.

Scariest part: Audio of lovers quarreling at the bloodied Valentine’s corner #TooReal

Evil Empress Qing

Where: Terrorcotta Haunted House
Deadly sin: Cruelty

The ambitious Empress Qing relentlessly pursues power, and all who oppose her will have their eyes plucked out or their limbs wrenched asunder. She’s also got an army of demonic Terracotta warriors at the ready, lest you think you can escape her clutches.

Scariest part: When a ghost blocked our path and gave us wrong directions. It’s a good thing we were too busy running and screaming to hear what they were.

Where: Make The Cut haunted house
Deadly Sin: Narcissism

Auditions went horribly wrong in this blood-spattered studio, where we spotted wannabe KPop stars getting carved up – in the most literal sense – amidst disturbingly danceable beats.

Scariest part: The amount of blood and guts we spied while witnessing what was probably supposed to be a liposuction.

Zombies who can only be killed by lasers

Where: Zombie Laser Tag Experience
Deadly sin: All of them, basically

Zombies who can’t be killed with shotguns and baseball bats? That is just wrong. Kill it with fire. Or well, with laser guns, which you can wield when you sign up in teams of four. To beat the game, simply put on a brainwave-scanning headband, which will dole out clues for you to solve. How we’re supposed to pause long enough to do so while being chased is anyone’s guess.

Scariest part: The fact that these headbands can read our brain waves, but cannot protect our actual brains from infection. Can we get a brainwave-reading helmet next time?
