The 8th ASEAN Para Games kicked off at the National Indoor Stadium last night (Jun 3) as Singapore hosts the Games for the first time.

The opening ceremony, which featured four movements celebrating the region's finest para athletes, has been two years in the making. The performances featured both able-bodied performers and the disabled from various ASEAN countries including para-athletes. The Games, which is held from Dec 3 to 9, will see more than 1,100 athletes from ten nations competing across 15 sports.

Earlier on Thursday, a torch parade saw torchbearers, including Mediacorp actor Desmond Tan, carry the flame along a 5.5-kilometre route from Marina Bay Sands to the Singapore Sports Hub. Seven other torchbearers including shooter Aishah Samad and swimmer Yip Pin Xiu carried the torch on its final journey around the Indoor Stadium during the opening ceremony before lighting the cauldron.
