Orchard Road has transformed into a magical wonderland, complete with hanging globes and interactive installations for Christmas.

The annual light-up, Christmas on A Great Street, was launched on Saturday (Nov 11) evening with a ceremony officiated by President Halimah Yacob.

Unlike previous years, the Christmas lights along the 2.88-kilometre stretch from Tanglin Mall to Plaza Singapura will be turned on daily from 3pm, instead of 6.30pm, so visitors can better enjoy day effects of the decorations.

The installations are made using material that are reflective of the day’s lights, while the 1,200 hanging globes that adorn trees along Orchard Road consist of coloured fabric intertwined with LED fairy lights so "even in the daytime you can see the points of light coming out", said Orchard Road Business Association (ORBA) chairman Mark Shaw.

Another first is a Christmas Village, inspired by those in Europe, which will operate from Nov 25 to Dec 25. Located outside Ngee Ann City, the Christmas Village will feature alfresco dining and pop-up stores from more than 25 brands including Starbucks, PAUL bakery, and Toast Box, as well as a Santa House and two-storey carousel. There will also be nightly “live” performances and a countdown concert on Christmas Eve.

The Christmas light-up along Orchard Road runs until Jan 1, 2018.

Apart from the Christmas lights, there will also be pop-up stores and dreamlike installations along the sidewalk.

Among the installations is the Walk of Wonder in front of Forum The Shopping Mall. The 20-metre long passage made with reflective fabric and fairy lights will transport you to a fantasy world.
