For most of us, naps are an uncommon luxury. Not for Senior Manhunt finalist Ryan Chen (right). The 31-year-old suffers from a rare condition, narcolepsy, which causes him to fall to sleep uncontrollably, making it difficult to lead a normal life.

It is usually triggered when engaging in low energy activities such as driving (he had two near-misses on the road when he was taking lessons) or during meetings, but he’s also dozed off while clubbing and talking on the phone.

“Shortly after secondary school, I was really taken with this girl I knew. And back then we would talk on the phone at night. We would start off really well and all of the sudden, I would go silent on her so that was really embarrassing,” the fitness coach said in an interview with Toggle during the Manhunt Singapore press conference at Nigiro Cafe yesterday.

It’s easy for Ryan to laugh now but the first 23 years of his life were “very difficult”. His condition affected his work, studies, and love life. Even after he was diagnosed during his National Service days and was under medication, the side effects, which included headaches and nausea, took a toll on him.

It was only after he decided to turn his life around eight years ago that he realised that staying active was the only way to break away from medication. He began his “tough” fitness journey and lifestyle, and the rest, as they say, is history.

Today, the once overweight kid, who has never passed a physical fitness test in his life, is proud of his transformation - especially his glutes - and hopes to use the competition to spread awareness about mental and neurological illnesses that often go undiagnosed. There’s just one huge challenge though: strutting around in trunks.

Said Ryan: “I don’t think getting out in swimwear in front of cameras is something anyone would get used to.”

Fellow Senior Manhunt hopeful, Arun Rosiah, also hopes to inspire others with his health struggles.

Based on photos of his toned physique, it’s impossible to guess that just a year ago, the 52-year-old PE teacher, who sports a hipster beard and sexy salt-and-pepper locks, was fighting for his life.

The father-of-two’s world came crashing down when he was diagnosed with stage 3 colorectal cancer in November 2015. Through sheer grit and tenacity, he not only managed to beat cancer, but he also kicked it in the a**.

Though he is still on the road to full recovery, Arun, who wasn’t present at the press conference where the 20 junior and 10 senior finalists were unveiled, hopes that through Manhunt, which has always been on his bucket list, he can inspire fellow cancer patients and survivors that there is life after the disease.

The Manhunt Singapore grand final will be held 8 September 2017.
