1. Carrot Cake $23.80 for 500g (left)
OLD SENG CHOONG, ORDER ONLINE BY FEB 6 AND ENJOY 30 PERCENT OFF. WWW.OLDSENGCHOONG.COM
Probably the best packaged carrot cake we’ve had in forever. While it’s good pan-fried till lightly crisp (we garnished it with furikake and sakura ebi in this pic), we prefer it steamed. So you can savour the creamy texture of the meltingly soft rice flour block bursting with tender cubes of sweet steamed radish, fragrant lap cheong and dried shrimp in all its purity. So tasty it doesn’t need any soy sauce or chilli. It’s made by the former founder of Bakerzin, Daniel Tay, who started this online biz as a tribute to his father when the latter ran an old-school confectionery shop of the same name between the ’60s and the ’90s. Skip the middling yam cake — oddly filled with peanuts — from the same brand, though.
2. Salted Egg Yolk Cookies $22 for 420g (right)
PIES & COFFEE, FOUR OUTLETS INCLUDING #01-25 ROBERTSON WALK, 11 UNITY ST, S237995. TEL: 6733-9272. WWW.PIESNCOFFEE.COM
A delicious cookie, but if you’re looking for a powerful salted egg hit, then this is not it. What it is: a wonderfully fresh, crusty orb that crumbles agreeably with each bite into a buttery, slightly sandy puddle with just a whisper of savouriness from the preserved yolk.
