We raided Daiso and Miniso for the best beauty finds under $11

We all know that feeling - you want to look like a million bucks but can't afford to burn a hole in your wallet. But is it really possible to achieve a flawless face worthy of a hot date or Met Gala in just under $11? We put this to the test at Asian budget marts Daiso and Miniso.

Skincare

Great makeup starts with a beautiful base. For skincare, we turned to Daiso to give us the cheap and the downright bizarre. The Japanese "dollar store" carries an entire array of unique skin-caring agents including milky lotion formulated with the nation’s staple rice wine Sake, Charcoal face wash, fruit peeling gels and even sunscreen. While we would think twice before slathering on a $2 toner, it's definitely comforting to know that we can afford to look after our skin even during a recession.

This is the most expensive item on the list, but $10.90 for a BB cushion? Gold. Miniso's Back To Sixteen BB Cushion offers SPF50+ PA+++ protection as well as brightening and moisturising properties, with high coverage to boot. Blends pretty smoothly (for its price) and as its name suggests, we look like we've time-travelled back to sixteen. Set your foundation to a smooth matte finish with Daiso's pressed powder at $2.

Want brows on fleek? Miniso offers you perfectly shaped brows at a fraction of the cost. Available in a versatile grey-toned shade, the all-in-one palette provides two powder colours in a long-lasting waterproof formula as well as an applicator and brush tool at just $3. There's also a volumising and long-wearing beeswax Curl Up Mascara, affordably priced at $4. Daiso offers a variety of six-quad eyeshadow palettes and intensely pigmented liquid eyeliners at a mind-boggling $2 each.

Looks you can achieve: Natural, smoky, Ariana Grande's smouldering eyes...just about anything, really.

Concealer

We personally prefer using stick concealers because they seem to deliver better coverage, but it's nice to know that Miniso offers them in all three formats - pencil, liquid, and even cushion. Can't vouch for the Cushion Concealer's moisturising and non-irritating claims, but the cushion applicator is a pleasure to apply and succeeds in disguising a few tiny moles on our faces.

Falsies

Make those pretty peepers pop with Daiso's monstrous range of fake eyelashes. Whether you're looking for thick, blown-out lashes or dainty little things to complement those already stunning peepers, Daiso has 'em all. Tip: To really get the most out of your falsies, use a pair of scissors to cut your false eyelashes into smaller pieces and apply them in assorted order along your eye for a natural yet volumised look.

It's all about contouring and highlighting this season and it looks like Miniso is ahead of the game. At $4.90, their 2-in-1 Highlight & Contour Stick is exactly what us trend-crazed, overly exposed budget Barbies need in our lives. Sad to say though, that the colour-payoff is pretty paltry and the texture chalky but if used with caution, the result is a decently contoured face at a great price. Complete your look with Miniso's pink cream blusher for a rosy blush.

For an even more economical option, try Daiso's lipstick in red or pink at $2.

Tools

Now that you've got your face in place, you need the tools to touch it up to a flawless finish. From travel-ready compressed towels to an entire cosmetics brush kit and eyelash curler for only $2 each, who says you can't have a little luxury on a budget? Also, we can't rave enough about Daiso's puff sponge detergent which is, hands down, the best tool cleaner we’ve ever used. Dirt melts away like magic in less than a second.

Smell like your horoscope with Miniso's quirky range of Universe Horoscope Perfumes that express your unique personality. Based on the four elements "fire, water, earth, and air", spritz on Capricorn's earthy scent or Sagittarius' free-spirited, musky scent for a figurative trek around the cosmos. Although the scent smells a tad cheap for our liking, the 10ml bottle is an adorable pocket-friendly, travel essential.

Final rounded-up amount: $39 - Your entire beauty arsenal costs less than the price of a premium lipstick. Congratulations! You look like a million bucks at a fraction of the cost. The final verdict: Don't expect truffle extract in your skincare or luxury-grade colour payoff but at its price, 5/5 for the extensive array of shades, options, and number of looks you can pull-off at a decent quality.
