A Bouncin’ good time

“Hi, you look like you give good shade,” says Joshua Tan before scurrying under our umbrella. No, it’s not a cheesy pick-up line and this isn’t some pretty scene out of a Korean drama. The 24-year-old actor is merely — and, may we add, desperately — seeking respite from the scorching sun.

We’re at Sentosa’s Palawan Beach, where Joshua is about to take on the BounceOFF! Inflatable Race for The 5 Show. Joining Joshua on this blazing Tuesday morning are Class 95’s Tim Oh and Simone Heng, Tanglin’s Roz Pho, comedian Fakkah Fuzz and The Sam Willows’ Sandra Riley Tang.

BounceOFF! is an obstacle race set against giant inflatable floats that’s happening on Sentosa on Oct 3. Think of it as a family-friendly version of Wipe Out crossed with your kids’ favourite bouncy castle. The actual race consists of 11 obstacles over a 3.2km distance that takes you from Tanjong Beach, past Palawan Beach and then to Siloso Beach. But for this celebs' challenge, they are only taking on three of the bouncy obstacles.

Truth be told, the real enemy today is neither the giant inflatables nor highly competitive celebs… but the blazing heat. The race has barely started and we, along with the cast and crew, are sweating buckets and feeling like we’ve been trapped inside a sauna. “It’s a wonderful day to dry clothes,” deadpans Sandra.

Scorching temperatures aside, the celebs are game for the course. Though there are a few fumbles, falls and #facepalm moments, they later tell us that the obstacle course is a cakewalk compared to the army-style bootcamp workout typical of such races.

BounceOFF!, you can say, is designed for the Average Joe, not G.I. Joe. You apparently do not need ninja-like reflexes to have a go at this family-friendly game — especially with giant inflatables cushioning your every fall.

“It’s not Mission Impossible. Anybody can do it, even kids,” says Fuzz. In case you’re wondering, the girls come out victors over the boys. So much for it being easy huh, Fuzz. [For all you non-competitive types, you can also head on down to the BounceOFF! Bazaar at Siloso Beach for the day-long carnival where there’ll be inflatable games like Bouncy Castle and the Inflatable Rock Wall.]

And despite the fact that it’s been called a ‘race’, you don’t have to go all Jason Statham when you take part. At the risk of sounding clichéd, it’s all in the name of good ol’ fun.

As Fuzz puts it: “I don’t watch Wipe Out to see someone win — I watch it to see someone fall. So if you want to watch your friends fall flat on their faces and laugh at them, then BounceOFF! is definitely for you.”
