Circular Road transforms from sleazy to snazzy

Forget Boat Quay and Clarke Quay (until Boat Quay gets a much-needed facelift soon) — Circular Road is the place to be if you want to eat, drink and be merry. With a swanky new look and a fun mix of F&B and entertainment establishments, the street that seemed trapped in the 1950s finally caught up with the times, all while retaining its old-world charm. Here’s a guide to the best places to check out during the long weekend.

Refuge

Hip-hop is not dead — as proven by Refuge, Singapore’s only music bar and club dedicated to the genre. Chill out with a drink after work at the bar on Level 3 before dancing all night (not on a work day of course) in the club on Level 2. Or you can just relax on the lush couches and admire the graffiti artwork while enjoying the tunes by the resident DJs, including R&B and hip-hop maven Big Mike and DJ Cherish.

+39 Gelato Bar

We love ice cream, but we’d love it more often if it were a little more guilt-free. Enter +39 Gelato Bar, which serves gelato made daily with the freshest ingredients from Singapore and Italy. You won’t find artificial flavourings, colours, preservatives or additives here. Too good to be true? The open concept area means you can watch your ice cream being made before your eyes.

Hero’s

You’ll feel like a modern cowboy the moment you step into Hero’s — the restaurant-bar is designed to look like an old western saloon, complete with brick and stone wall fixtures, longhorn skull and saddles. Dine on Tex-Mex classics like the chicken quesadilla and gourmet burgers, while resident band Vevo warms up the crowd.

Marco Marco

Eating out doesn’t have to be bad for you with restaurants like Marco Marco — it serves up Italian cuisine made with the freshest ingredients and prepared without MSG. Their menu is made up of paninis, pastas and pizzas with fusion influences, named after the city or country they’re created after (The Singapore pasta is a linguine with laksa cream sauce!).

Ô Comptoir

From the same people behind popular French bistro Ô Batignolles, Ô Comptoir is an open-air restaurant and bar featuring an extensive menu of crepes. Besides traditional French flavours like cheese galettes, you’ll also find unusual Asian-inspired crepes like Chase the Spices, filled with Masala chicken, peanuts and chilli, and Khao San Road, inspired by the flavours of Thailand.
