15 beauty lessons from stars without double eyelids

Who says you need creases to be beautiful? Here’s how to make the most of your monolids and hooded eyes

CL

Countless vloggers, bloggers, and makeup artists have drawn inspiration from the 2NE1 rapper, whose dramatic makeup has taught us that you don’t need folds to make your eyes look distinctive.

Beauty lesson: Those of us with monolids often bemoan our flat canvas; after all, it’s not easy to do a smokey eye when you have no creases to guide you. But you don’t need folds in order to play with colour – a few liberal swipes of eyelid primer will help your makeup stay in place. Once you’re done, look straight into the mirror and use eyeliner to apply an arch over the top of your eye, which you can then use as a guideline for patting in the rest of your eye makeup.

G-Dragon

The best thing about G-Dragon’s monolids is that they lend his expressions quite a bit of versatility. He’s intimidating, but he’s mischievous. He’s scary, yet he’s cute. As these pictures show, he can pull off an “RBF” (b****y resting face) and an eye-smile with equal intensity.

Beauty lesson: If eyes are indeed the window to the soul, let yours do all the talking.

Eunhyuk

All right, we’ll admit that this photo of Eunhyuk heading off to his national service isn’t the best – in fact, we hardly recognise him with those shorn-off locks – but there’s no mistaking those eyes.

Beauty lesson: No matter what you do to your hair or what makeup you wear, people will recognise your eyes and your smile. So embrace them!

Liu Wen

Liu Wen, while lovely, is a bit of an unconventional beauty. We can only imagine a misguided talent agent here in Asia demanding that she correct her monolids and her wide, gummy smile. Thankfully, the Chinese supermodel did neither, which certainly helped her meteoric rise to fame. We love how skillfully she uses her features to convey emotion, be it delight (those dimples! That eye-smile!) or high-fashion severity.

Beauty lesson: Mascara, mascara, mascara.

Fei Fei Sun

When it comes to East Asian models, the Western world seems to favor those with monolids and hooded eyelids. Fei Fei Sun’s existence is proof that you don’t need giant doe-eyes to look lovable and cute; look at how sweet she is when she’s off-duty!

Beauty tip: Play up those eyebrows!

The sultry Brown Eyed Girls’ singer shows how monolids and a pout make a dangerous combination.

Beauty lesson: Want to show the world who’s boss? A penetrating stare is your best asset. Skip the eyelid tape and layer on a smoky eye instead.

Jay Chou

While Jay’s eyes are small, watching any of his music videos or performances will show you that they can convey just as much sorrow as a pair of big ‘ol peepers.

Beauty lesson: As much as we love Jay, we’re going to recommend that you monolidded boys stay away from beards. Well, unless you want to look like a crime boss.

Ji Hye Park

The South Korean-born Uniqlo model’s small, upturned eyes look lovely against her elfin features.

Beauty lesson: If your eyes are small and mono-lidded, hold off on the black eyeliner, as applying it to both your top and bottom lids can make your eyes look a little beady. Line your bottom lids with eyeshadow instead.

Kim Soo Hyun

Our favourite “alien oppa” wouldn’t look half as cute without his signature monolids and unevenly-sized eyes.

Beauty lesson: Asymmetry can make your face interesting. Embrace it!

LITERALLY #BOYFRIENDGOALS.

Beauty lesson: A sexy wink is all it takes to elevate monolids from “ugh, fix that with surgery” to “UGH, let me kiss that”.

Minzy

CL isn’t the only member of 2NE1 who can rock her single eyelids. Anyone who’s ever attempted to copy this look would know that Minzy’s winged eyeliner is a work of art. ‘

Beauty lesson: An eyeliner pen and a steady hand are all it takes to let people know that you’re NOT to be messed with.

The Korean singer-actor’s small eyes  and square-ish face made him a bit of an unconventional beauty amidst all the wide-eyed pretty boy artistes of his era; since then, however, it’s been clear that guys with small eyes are all the rage right now. (Perhaps this dude’s popularity had something to do with it?)

Beauty lesson: Who could deny that face?! Disappearing eyes can be just as effective as puppy dog ones.

Xiumin

It’s hard to believe that Xiumin is not only 25, but he’s the oldest member of EXO. Look at how kind and youthful his upturned eyes are!

Beauty lesson: There’s a common misconception that huge eyes with plenty of folds make you look friendlier, which – based on these photos – just ain’t true. Also, the only thing we love more than a guy wearing eyeliner is a guy with monolids wearing eyeliner – and looking prettier than half the female population while doing it.

And who can forget our homegrown stars? JJ’s cheeky monolidded eyes and dimpled smile have helped him appear 18 for the past two decades.

Beauty lesson: Lay off the beauty apps! While it’s trendy now to “mei pai” your selfies before posting them, embracing your small-eyed smile might just be the key to preserving your youth.

Nat Ho

Nat Ho

The thought of Nat Ho ever spoiling his face with eyelid tape, let alone eyelid surgery, is both horrible and hilarious.

Beauty lesson: Try as we might, we can’t think of a lesson here, except to say that you needn’t despair if your natural folds are hidden from view. Confidence is key. Your seemingly monolidded eyes might just be what others like most about your face.
