1. Consider the lighting

There’s a reason why the makeup for photo shoots and the red carpet look so different from what we’re used to wearing on a daily basis – and that is lighting. Flash lights and photography lights are much brighter and harsher than sunlight, so you’ll need to adjust your makeup accordingly to avoid looking greasy, which has an effect of making your face look bigger. “The key thing is to keep the face matte,” says Dior Pro Team makeup artist Yoshitomo Takahashi. He pointed out that skin that looks luminous in real life will look greasy under such harsh lighting.

We recommend:
Revlon ColorStay 2-in-1 Makeup & Concealer, $30.90
Nars Velvet Matte Skin Tint, $70
Diorskin limited-edition Nude Air Summer Glow Loose Powder, $90

2. Sculpt but subtly

2. Sculpt but subtly

On the other hand, a uniformly matte face can look flat (and therefore, bigger). So it’s crucial to use colour to add dimension to the face, just like on a canvas. Takahashi recommends using a matte bronzing powder just a little darker than your skin tone and a large face brush to sculpt the face so that mistakes are not so obvious. Apply the bronzing powder in the same angle on the lower jawline, top of the cheekbones and on the temple bones above the brow bone. This is cause your facial features and shape to appear more chiselled.

We recommend:
Diorblush Sculpt in Beige Contour, $72, available on counters from 20 May.
Urban Decay Beached Bronzer in Sunkissed, $42

3. Make it pop

3. Make it pop

Adding some highlighter powder on the cheeks and brow bone is crucial to make the front of the face pop, giving the illusion of sharper, more angular face contours. But take it easy with the shimmer, and make sure that the shimmery particles are extra fine so as to look subtle and luminous, not shiny. Apply it in a horizontal line from the nose bridge to the top of the cheekbone and blend carefully.

Illamasqua Beyond Powder in Epic, price unavailable
Cle de Peau Illuminizing Face Enhancer in No. 15, $140

4. Keep hydrated

You’re not just dreaming it – your face does seem more haggard and your jowls look droopier towards the end of the day. Partly because of gravity, and partly because dehydrated skin loses its plumpness. Keep skin hydrated and bouncier throughout the day with a great skincare regimen that releases hydrating ingredients throughout the day.

We recommend:
Fresh Rose Deep Hydration Face Serum, $80
Bioderma Hydrabio Crème, $44.90
