A Korean celebrity hairstylist rates our local stars’ hair

Time and time again, we’ve served up unfavourable opinions about our local stars’ hairstyles, only to look back and wonder if we were too harsh. Since beauty is in the eye of the beholder, we consulted Korean celebrity hairstylist Gunhee, who has worked with stars like Super Junior’s Heechul, Akdong Musician, 4 Minute, and JYJ’s Kim Jae-joong, for his opinion on some of our local artistes’ most iconic hairdos.

In an interview at the newly-opened Bella-K Beauty House, where Gunhee serves as Principal Director, we introduced the Korean stylist to our local artistes’ past and present hairstyles – and suffice to say, he was not shy about serving up his opinion.

Read on to see what Gunhee thinks of Ian Fang’s blonde hair, Christopher Lee’s curly mop, and whether Carrie Wong looks better with short hair or long hair.

Quan Yi Fong

We said…
That Yi Fong’s Star Awards 2015 Show 2 look (pictured in the middle) was one of the worst Star Awards hairstyles ever

Gunhee says...
That out of the three looks, it seems the most updated, dismissing the red and the blonde hair in favour of discussing how the black and blue hair could have been better.

“Yi Fong is a very elegant lady,” he said in Korean. “I can tell that she is someone who has experimented with her hair a lot, so she knows that short hair works best for her. But longer hair would bring out her natural elegance more.”

Kate Pang

We said….
That Kate looks best with long, effortless hair rather than with a Donald Trump-style combover

Gunhee says…
“I like the natural style,” he said, pointing to her photo from the upcoming second season of Toggle Talk as his favourite.

He wasn’t big on her pulled-back hair from last year’s Star Awards Show 2 either. “When Korean stars wear this hairstyle, they use makeup to bring out the hairline and make it more defined.” He also said that it made Kate’s face look a little too skinny, noting that she seems much younger now. (We’ve got her pregnancy glow to thank for that!).

Christopher Lee

We said….
That Chris’ poofy ‘do made him look like he’d just gotten off a rollercoaster

Gunhee says….
(Points to the poofy hair): “NO.”

Despite his emphatic response to Chris’ Star Awards 2010 hair, Gunhee complimented the actor on his adventurous streak, saying that he could tell from the picture that a unique sense of style is the actor's trademark. But at the same time, he much prefers the actor’s current look as it brings out his handsome features.

Jeanette Aw

We said….
That Jeanette looked like she’d stepped straight out of the shower and onto the red carpet at the Star Awards Show 2 last year. Stick to dry locks, please!

Gunhee says…
“It’s good for celebrities to play around with their hair but this is too much. She had long hair in the previous show, so if she wanted to change her hairstyle for the next one, just cutting it would have been enough. Going shorter and slicking it back is too much.”

Well, it looks like Jeanette (or her stylist) know best, as Jeanette really has stuck to an effortless lob this year.

Desmond Tan

We said…
That Desmond looks far better with a softer, classic hairstyle than he does with an undercut and ponytail

Gunhee says…
“Was this (the ponytail) for a role? Oh…”

“It is not easy for Asians to pull off this ‘up style for guys’,” Gunhee said, noting that the look is called a “barber cut” in Korea, before choosing Desmond’s current hairstyle (on the right) as his favourite. “Caucasians usually have thicker eyebrows and their eyes are more defined and set in. This hairstyle will bring out their features, but it’s very hard for Asians since their features are not always as defined.”

Good move! This shade of strawberry blonde makes him look like a Korean rapper from L.A.

Gunhee says…
“The blonde! He looks warmer with this hair colour.”

Jeffrey Xu

We said…
Good riddance to Jeffrey’s distractingly red hair from 2015.

Gunhee says…
“This guy is very idol-looking and he seems very young, it’s good when young people experiment with their hair. Actors usually don’t like to experiment with their hair and it’s not easy for them to choose a bright colour like red, but both of these looks suit him.”

All right, Jeffrey, someone disagrees with us – we promise we won’t say too much if you show up on the Star Awards red carpet this year with pink or purple hair.

Carrie Wong

We said…
Carrie looks just as good with short hair as she does with long hair, even though she thinks the former makes her look like a “pretty boy”.

Gunhee says….
“There’s one important factor: If you’re pretty, everything works.” Ain’t that the truth.

Zhang Zhenhuan

We said…
That Zhenhuan looks like two completely different people when his hair’s styled and when it’s left down. So, Gunhee, does the “if you’re pretty, everything works” rule apply to this handsome Duke?

Gunhee says…
“Er, no, not for this actor – his forehead is a bit high, not good to reveal it too much,” he said – not that there’s anything wrong with high foreheads, just that the combed-back hair looks a little severe. “He has a boy next door feel and it’s better to stay with that!”

Qi Yuwu

We said…
That Yuwu’s “electrocution” look and Severus Snape hair are better left in the past.

Gunhee says…
Upon seeing Yuwu’s puffy hair, “NO” – which is when the salon’s public relations executive reminded Gunhee that he’d actually met Yuwu the day before when he and Joanne Peh had stopped by the salon. After mulling over this revelation for a few seconds, Gunhee laughed a bit, given how different Yuwu looked back in the day.

“When I saw him in person yesterday, his hair was a bit shorter than this,” Gunhee said, pointing to Yuwu’s Star Awards photo from last year. “He looks better with slightly longer hair. He is basically a good-looking actor, so he can suit a lot of hairstyles, just not the puffy one. It looks old-fashioned. He should go back to the [Star Awards 2015] hair.”

Bryan Wong

Bryan Wong

We said…
That the platinum blonde hair was an experiment gone horribly wrong.

Gunhee says…
That he’s a fan of the blonde #thatawkwardmoment

“These are two really different hairstyles so they are hard to compare – both look good,” Gunhee assured us. “I prefer the clean and tidy look, so for guys who have neat hair like Bryan Wong, when they try out different hair colours it will usually turn out okay. The facial hair in his current photo also looks good because he has really thick eyebrows!”.

But if there’s one thing Bryan – or any of the guys on this list – should stay away from, it’s long hair.

“it’s not easy for guys to pull off long hair unless they are really super pretty boys like those in Korea,” Gunhee said.
