Our beauty favourites from 2015

While this year wasn’t the worst, it certainly had its stressful moments. Here are the products that helped us get through them!

UD | Gwen Stefani Eyeshadow Palette

This gorgeous palette might just be our favourite celebrity-beauty collaboration of 2015. Not only do the packaging and colours capture Gwen’s distinctive style, but the eyeshadows names – “Bathwater”, “Baby”, “Harajuku”, to name a few – are nice nods to her illustrious music career. While most of the shades are pretty neutral, the blue (a nice ode to her infamous blue hair in the ‘90s) adds a touch of rock star cred to the colour palette.

Kiehl’s Daily Reviving Concentrate

We never thought we’d find a beauty oil that worked as well as Kiehl’s Midnight Recovery Oil, but we were proven wrong when they released the Daily Reviving Concentrate, which does the same thing as its predecessor, but during the day. Its light formula never feels too oily on the skin, while the blend of essential and botanical oils (including ginger root oil and sunflower seed oil) help fight “skin fatigue”.

The Body Shop Spas of the World

With any luck, we’ll receive a big enough salary bump to go on a global spa tour next year. But in the meantime, we’ve been loving The Body Shop’s Spas of the World collection, which uses top-notch ingredients from around the globe to turn one’s bathroom into a “spathroom”. Our favourites: The Hawaiian Kukui Cream (S$59.90), which uses kukui seed oil to restore skin suppleness; the Africa Ximenia Scrub (S$55.90) to exfoliate and condition skin; the Thai Lemongrass Massage Oil (S$30.90), for revitalising the mind; and of course, the Body Shop’s famous Dead Sea Salt Scrub (S$59.90) for scouring off dead skin.

Dr. Ci:Labo Aqua-Collagen-Gel Enrich-Lift EX

Don’t be intimidated by its crazily long name: this all-in-one product works almost as well as any eight-step skincare routine. We’ll admit to being skeptical about the product description, which claimed that this cream serves as a toner, moisturiser, serum, eye cream, face cream, massage cream, mask and makeup base all at the same time, but we’ll be darned, the effects actually do last the entire day.

Clio Tinted Tattoo Kill Brow, Kill Brow Conte Powder Kit, and Sharp, So Simple Pen Liner

Where do we begin with Clio? Their eyeliner and eyebrow range, which was just released this month, is truly a game-changer – not only does their Tinted Tattoo Kill Brow (which comes in Earth Brown and Soft Brown) give you instant ulzzang eyebrows, but the Sharp, So Simple pen liner really does hold up under sweat and humidity. If you’re up for the challenge, however, you can always try out the Kill Brow Conte Powder Kit (rated “advanced” in the product description), which includes three different brushes for combing, filling, lining, contouring, and holding.

Marc Anthony Hydrating Coconut & Shea Butter Haircare Range

It’s not always easy to find coconut-scented hair products here in Singapore (somehow, they’re much more popular in the West), which is why we fell in love with Marc Anthony’s new range at first sniff. Not only do these products keep the split ends at bay, but they sure can take our minds back to a tropical paradise.

Bio-Essence Bio Treatment Essence-In-Oil

If you’re anything like us, you have a tendency to wake up with random scratches and no recollection of how you acquired them. Or, ugh – perhaps more than a decade since you were an adolescent, you’re still struggling to prevent acne scars. Bio-Essence to the rescue! This affordable, light, non-greasy beauty oil uses 11 natural ingredients to speed up wound healing and moisturise the skin, thus enhancing its elasticity.

Etude House’s Bling Me Prism Collection

Out of Etude House’s many product releases this year, we took a special liking to the Bling Me Prism Collection, a collaboration between Etude House and Korean accessories brand, High Cheeks. We loved how the packaging looked a little more pop-art, perhaps less princessy, than Etude House’s usual fare, while retaining the brand’s playfulness.

Prices range from S$5.89 - S$17.90
Available exclusively at Etude House Flagship Store in Wisma Atria and Etude House VivoCity

The blotterazziT is one of the more unique beauty products we came across this year. As the first washable, reusable cushion blotter, this teardrop-shaped blotter fits into all contours in one’s face, absorbing oil without disturbing the makeup on top of it.

YSL La Laque Couture The Mats

Matte lipsticks are all the rage right now, which is why we rejoiced upon receiving YSL’s La Laque Couture in Matte. The brand might have an overwhelming palette of gorgeous shades to choose from, but for matte beginners, we’d recommend what’s pictured above: N°202, N° 203, N°204, N°207 Le Nu, and N°208

Lancome Parisian Inspiration by Caroline De Maigret Palette

This limited edition palette screamed “Parisian sophistication” the minute we laid eyes on it, and we’ve been lusting after it ever since. The warm, rosy eyeshadow colours could lend a dash of chic maturity to your usual look, while the illuminator and blush can add a flush of youth.

Laneige Intense Lip Gel

Laneige Intense Lip Gel

As much as we love a bright lip, we have to admit how annoying it is to prep our lips with balm, add colour, and then dab on some gloss. Not to mention the hassle of reapplication. Thankfully, Laneige’s Intense Lip Gel spared us some of the pain, as it functions like a balm, colour, and gloss all in one. We especially love the non-sticky texture and the brilliant colour payoff.

Mederma Stretch Marks Therapy Cream

Have you ever taken a good look at yourself in the mirror, only to scream in horror at the sudden appearance of stretch marks? While they might be hard to avoid, there are products available to help make them less visible. Mederma, the number one doctor recommended scar brand in America, diminishes discoloration and tightens skin with noticeable results in just four weeks.

NUDESTIX

That’s right, we’re including this brand as a whole because it’s just that awesome. Nudestix, which was inspired by founder Jenny Frankel’s two teenage daughters, is tailor-made for today’s teens, as she consulted them at length while coming up with the products. NUDESTIX seem to follow the “Kendall Jenner” aesthetic, focusing on neutral eye tones and the occasional bold lip. Products are touch-and-go – each and every one comes in stick form and includes a metal case and a mini sharpener. Totally awesome for people like us, who can’t be bothered to fiddle with palettes in the middle of a busy work day.

DCS Nutriderm Anti-Ageing Range
DCS Nutriderm Anti-Ageing Range
21 Dec 2015

DCS Nutriderm Anti-Ageing Range

We love a “healthy-smelling” skincare range, and DCS’ Nutriderm range totally fits the bill. The Korean brand’s anti-ageing line uses the Korean ginseng berry, which can only be harvested once every four years over a seven-day period, to help the skin fight free radicals and maintain its suppleness. As if that weren’t enough, it also uses volcanic seawater from Jeju for an extra boost of nutrients. Did we mention that it smells like a spa? Just what we need before knocking out at the end of a long evening.

Prices range from S$33.50 to S$53

Philosophy’s The Microdelivery Overnight Anti-aging Peel

We were pretty remiss in visiting the spa this year, so Philosophy’s Microdelivery Overnight Anti-aging Peel was a total lifesaver. This product contains two components: a solution containing glycolic, lactic and salicylic acid and a soothing night gel rich with antioxidants, oat kernel extract and peptides. Apply the solution first, and after two minutes, apply the gel so that your newly-sensitive skin cells can soak up all the nutritional goodness.

RMK Airy Powder Foundation

RMK Airy Powder Foundation

While BB Cushions, CC Creams, and the like might have overshadowed good ‘ol powder foundation this year, those who still enjoy a traditional powder compact might have come across RMK’s Airy Powder Foundation, which uses silk-coating powder, amino-coating bright powder, and specialised microscopic facial oils for a satiny finish. Nourishing ingredients such as citrus peel extract, bilberry extract, avocado oil and salvia extract will also help hydrate your face.

The RMK Airy Powder Foundation is available in nine shades at S$65

Moonshot Skin Fuel Cream

Moonshot Skin Fuel Cream

Korean beauty brand Moonshot, which finally arrived in Singapore’s Sephora this year, offers a full lineup of makeup and skincare products. If there’s one product that really impressed us, though, it’s the Skin Fuel Cream, which has a cooling, “water jelly texture” that feels – to put it simply – shiok when you apply it. The formula thins out upon contact with the skin, meaning that it never feels too sticky when you’re battling the humidity.

Solinotes Perfume

We LOVED these fun scents, new to Sephora from France. Not only do they smell great, but they are designed to be worn solo or to be mixed together. Simply mix and match your two favourite scents, then spray two pumps of one Solinote and one spray of another Solinote for a customised creation.

Toni & Guy Dry Shampoo

Toni & Guy Dry Shampoo

No head of hair is safe from the humidity here in Singapore, hence the need for dry shampoo. We love how Toni & Guy released four different kinds of dry shampoo to target four different hair needs. You’ve got the Casual Matt Texture Dry Shampoo to reduce oiliness; Classic Perfect Tease Dry Shampoo for soft waves; Creative Express Reboost Dry Shampoo for lifting roots; and finally, Glamour Sky High Volume Dry Shampoo for creating body.

COMING SOON: For Beloved One’s Melasleep Brightening Daily Defence Cream

Despite our resolution to be more healthy, we definitely didn’t get enough sleep this year, and our complexion definitely suffered for it – which is why we love For Beloved One’s Melsasleep Brightening Daily Defence Cream (also known as “DD Cream”), which comes in three colours to target three major skin issues: peach, for those with an uneven skin tone; rose, for those with overly pale skin; and lavender, for an overly yellow skin tone. And did we mention that the cream acts as a barrier against pollution?
