From your pout to your purse, here’s how to stick to sartorial tradition this festive season

The significance of the colour red during Chinese New Year (CNY) needs no introduction: in addition to symbolising joy and prosperity, legend depicts that the flaming hue was used by villagers to frighten away a mythical beast called Nian (a.k.a. “Year” in Chinese) who would eat their animals and children at the start of every new year.

Thankfully, the worst most of us have to deal with during this occasion are nosy relatives and piling on the festive pounds instead of a man-devouring monster, but the practice of sporting scarlet still lives on. If you’re still undecided on how to adhere to the tradition this CNY (other than to throw on a crimson cheongsam), click through our head-to-toe shopping guide for ideas:

Give your mane a fiery makeover (with meaning)

Red hues are a perennial favourite among the hair-colouring crowd in Singapore, but they are – unsurprisingly – especially trendy during CNY, and while most of us have probably gone for red dye at least once, we don’t remember ever having the tone of our tresses touted to signify a range of well wishes.

Now, thanks to L’Oreal Professionnel Singapore, red hair aficionados can now add meaning to their mop with the salon’s four specially-created looks, which each represent “Happiness”, “Health”, “Prosperity” and “Career Success”, and they won’t have to worry about it losing its lustre before Chap Goh Mei – the tint houses a new technology that intensifies tones and has a high fade resistance. Hair’s to a fabulous Chinese New Year 2015!

If you don’t fancy the idea of becoming one bright beacon of blush, tone things down with pieces that mix red with other colours, or only incorporate it into smaller details like print motifs, trims or embellishments.

What we love about this is that we don’t have to worry about clashes with the other flame-hued components of our outfit i.e. shoes, bag and accessories – as auspicious as it might make us look, we don’t want to show up at all our relatives’ houses covered in pure blazing red on every part of our body.

Huge black geek glasses have been all the rage for a while now, so we think it’s about time some fashion savvy folk step up the game and flaunt some red frames instead. Whether they have prescription lenses or allow someone to poke their fingers right through into your eyes (not that we encourage such a savage act), it’ll make a fantastic conversation starter (at least there will be something to talk about, right?) and cement your status as “the cool cousin”.

Pucker up with cherry lips

If you’re not the kind of gal who regularly busts out the rouge, CNY is a great time to do it because a) there’s a chance you’ll be dressed up enough to pull off the glamorous, made-up look and b) you’ll more than likely to be taking tons of pictures and, of course, selfies, which are perfect opportunities to show off a perfectly painted pout.

If you’re a bold experimenter in the art of maquillage, feel free to venture into red shadow and liner territory, but if you’re wary of making yourself look like the main character in a Chinese opera, we recommend sticking to the tried-and-true rosy lip.

To most women (and some men), their bag is more than just a bag: it’s a statement piece. And what better colour for a statement piece to be in than the most statement-making shade of all? Plus, it will match those glorious hongbaos waiting to enter into its embrace (unless, of course, you are married, in which case it will match the hongbaos you’ll be parting sweet ways with).

When it comes to our personal philosophy for the tickers on our wrists, we say: go bold or go home. If you happen to share our belief, we know you’ll be psyched to strap on a fiery time-teller, whether it’s a classic metallic chronograph or a chic leather piece, to help you keep track of the minutes to midnight on CNY eve.

Sparkle, shimmer and shine in scarlet

A subtle and subdued outfit is the perfect chance for your jewellery to shine (literally), so if you’re opting to not be clothed completely in crimson this season, you can take it as a cue to break out the bloodshot bling, but er, try not to be creepy and wear a vial of actual human haemoglobin around your neck à la Angelina Jolie in her Billy Bob Thornton-romancing days – why do so when there are so many delightful (and much less morbid) trinkets in the same shade at everyone’s disposal?

From Dorothy’s legendary ruby slippers in The Wizard of Oz to Hallyu darling IU’s single ‘Red Shoes’, fiery footwear are far from strangers in the land of pop culture references. Dare to be different in Marsala

No, Marsala isn’t the name of a new European restaurant in town or an obscure Latin dance genre, but Pantone’s Colour of the Year. This rich and earthy wine red (which gives the drink its name) is great for those who shun the conspicuous nature of crimson yet want to find a way to honour sartorial rituals (as well as flaunt their knowledge on the latest trends in the fashion stratosphere).

All in all, it’s a fine and flattering tone that’s easy to match, whether it’s in your makeup or your wardrobe, and is a welcome respite from the mass of searing scarlet that will no doubt infiltrate the surroundings.
