Best dressed MPs at this year's National Day Parade

Let’s face it, our Members of Parliament (MPs) are known for many things but their style and fashion sense ain’t one of them. But that’s not to say they are all bad as witnessed at this year’s National Day Parade at the Padang. Sure, many dressed on the safe (read: boring) side and opted for the usual red shirts or Team Singapore polo tees, but a handful of MPs stood out on the grand stand for their sartorial choices. Here are our favourites:

PM Lee Hsien Loong

We love how our dear PM Lee’s shirt reminds us so clearly of the Singapore flag, and yet doesn’t look like it was fashioned directly out of one.

If there’s one thing we can gather from Irene Ng’s choice of outfits for the National Day celebrations, it’s that the Tampines GRC MP loves prints – and we love her prints! Case in point: her fitted lotus print dress with a cowl neck for the NDP and a patterned wrap dress for the Istana garden party.

We like how chic MP for West Coast GRC Foo Mee Har looks in this patterned wrap dress. Extra points for the Aug 9 calendar bag!

MP for Tampines GRC Bae Yam Keng looked dapper in this shirt he had specially designed and made by homegrown designer Alfie Leong for Singapore’s Golden Jubilee. “The red motif is made up of many '50's. There is a red button at the top as a symbol of our Little Red Dot,” he wrote on Facebook. The iconic Converse sneakers complete the look!

Senior Minister of State for Law and Education Indranee Rajah decided to go traditional but kept it stylish in this modern take of the sari in our national colours.

The Minister for Defence should also be the minister for defence against bad fashion among older men: his taste in quirky - but far from tacky - prints more than qualifies him for the job.

We’re having a major style crush on the minister’s tastefully theme-adhering two-tone dress, which is trendy yet elegant, formal yet laidback, and gorgeously age-appropriate. Even her iPhone case and matching red frames are cute!

You can’t go wrong with an orchid shirt, especially one that is simple and tastefully done. However, we couldn’t help but notice that it looks remarkably similar to the outfit the Sembawang GRC MP wore at last year’s NDP (bottom right). Too busy to shop for a new one this year, sir?

We’re a little surprised - in a good way - by this choice of dress by Senior Minister of State for Health and Manpower, Dr Amy Khor. While the stripes and skater cut of this dress look a little too young for the 57-year-old MP, she manages to balance it out with a string of pearls and red rosette brooch.

Also opting for stripes was Mrs Josephine Teo, Senior Minister of State for Finance and Transport, which she said “represent Singaporeans from all walks of life, living in harmony”. The crescent moon and stars bracelet made by a Bishan resident add a nice touch.
