Celebrity wedding looks we love: Mandopop edition

2016 must be a good year for weddings. It’s only September but we’ve seen a flurry of celebrity weddings by stars like Shu Qi and Stephen Fung to Ruby Lin and Wallace Huo. With Ken Chu of former Taiwan boyband F4 officially off the market on Saturday (Sep 3), we check out our favourite wedding looks from big names in the Mandarin music scene:

Ken Zhu & Vivian Han

Chinese actress Vivian Han looked every bit like a traditional and modern day princess when she tied the knot with Ken Chu in Bali last Saturday. The Chinese actress began her day in a dramatic red and gold Chinese kua before changing into an off-shoulder gown for the wedding ceremony. Though the surprise appearance of former F4 member Jerry Yen did steal a bit of the bride’s thunder, we’re sure her ornate lace gown and plunging neckline left a striking impression as well.

Nicky Wu & Cecilia Liu

Just when we thought Cecilia Liu couldn’t top the dreamy Monique Lhuillier dress she wore for her pre-wedding photo shoot, she upped her game for her Bali beach-side wedding with a custom-designed gown from French couture house Carven.

The Chinese actress wowed from head-to-toe in an embroidered gown, which reportedly cost a whopping HK$3.59 million (approximately S$629,000), with a matching Juliet cap veil and Jimmy Choo Swarovski crystal-encrusted heels. Although the wedding is all about the bride, we love how Nicky stood out by wearing a light grey Dolce and Gabbana tux and patterned bow tie as well as blue shoes to match the pastel-themed wedding.

Jay Chou & Hannah Quinlivan

When Jay Chou says he wants a fairy-tale wedding, he gets that fairy-tale wedding.

Pictures from him and new wife Hannah Quinlivan’s lavish ceremony at Yorkshire’s Selby Abbey in England look like they were taken straight out of a fantasy storybook, with the grand church setting, Jay’s princely getup and Hannah’s stunning lace ball gown.

Oh, and did we mention Hannah’s stunning lace ball gown? The sumptuous masterpiece, from Taiwanese boutique Sophia Weddings, had a heart-shaped cut-out at the back and a full skirt that would turn Cinderella, Belle, Aurora and every other Disney princesses uncharacteristically green with envy. Colour us completely unsurprised when Asian weddings over the next year or two have inspired brides going for the same kind of unabashed European grandeur, and we don’t blame them one bit.

The Malaysian songstress brought her six-year relationship with photographer Sidney Lu to the next level at an outdoor shindig in Taipei in 2014, wearing a conservative (she opted to be covered up because she is afraid of the cold) but very chic dress with a plush train and remarkably intricate lace needlework by Ersa Atelier.

While we certainly approve of that beauty, what we’re really raving about is what she wore for her pre-wedding photo shoot in Nepal: an ethnic-style creation by Mara Hoffman with stripes of vibrant colours and a dreamy, diaphanous skirt. We love how the folklore-ish feel of the frock and its many hues complement the structure and its flags in the background, making it a pic that really stands out. Who said all wedding photos have to be drenched in pastel filters, right?

Valen Hsu

We officially deemed the 40-year-old “queen of love songs” a style icon for older brides everywhere after seeing the delicate off-shoulder stunner she wore when she became Mrs. Big (her Korean hubby Choi Jae-sung is nicknamed Mr. Big). Trendy yet age-appropriate at the same time, it struck a nice balance with its modern stylishness that did not look like Valen was trying to dress half her age.

Another ceremony, where they went through traditional Korean wedding customs, was also held, in which the bride and groom wore hanbok costumes. Girls, this is what you can look forward to if you ever marry your beloved Hallyu oppa one day.

Mayday's Masa and Vicky Hsieh

Forget the glitz and glamour of a celebrity wedding. Mayday member Masa and his fashion designer wife Vicky Hsieh celebrated their union in typical rocker fashion with an intimate and casual sunset party on the romantic Greek island of Santorini. While Masa went classic with a sleek black tux, Vicky exuded boho chic in a halter lace cropped top and maxi skirt that showed off her toned mid-section and gorgeous tan. The leaf crown was the icing on the cake.

Christine Fan & Blackie Chen

What made Christine’s crystal-studded vintage-style gown special was that it was specially designed by her pal Jia Yongjie, together with late Taiwanese couturier Huang Shu Chi. The singer wore the frock for both her adorable wedding shoot with hubby Blackie as well as on her actual wedding day.

While we love the layers and layers of lacy ruffles on her skirt and the draped shoulder-less sleeve (not a very common sight among brides), we’re going to proceed with the cheesiness and say that Christine’s best accessory was her smile of total joy and bliss in both her wedding pictures and when she walked down the aisle with her dad. Just look at that girl beam!

On another note, we were delighted by the sight of Blackie’s ensemble as well – that is to say, his ensemble of best men: Lee Hom, Godfrey Gao and Eddie Peng. Thank you for the eye candy.

Leo Ku & Lorraine Chan

Lorraine Chan's vintage-style tea length dress, which she paired with socks and chunky heels, wasn’t exactly traditional but then again neither was her 2015 wedding to Leo Ku. From the gown to the wedding and invitation cards, everything was planned and designed by Leo, and the singer even decorated the cake himself. According to Leo, Lorraine had gained a bit of weight before their big day so he designed a dress that would “cover some of her flab”. His matching ivory tux was a nice touch.

Rachel Liang & Amos Zhang

While we love the custom-made poofy French satin gown Rachel Liang wore when she walked down the aisle, it was the long tulle veil that cascaded down her dress that stole the show. Featuring hand embroidered white lace, the veil and sweetheart gown were designed by well-known Taiwanese bridal boutique Lin Li.

Another head turner was the traditional Aboriginal costume the Taiwanese singer wore for her engagement ceremony. Colourful and elaborate, the Lukai tribe costume and headdress, which were previously worn by her sister at her wedding, weighed a whopping 5kg. Now that’s a sweet sacrifice.

Vanness Wu & Arissa Cheo

Former F4 heartthrob Vanness and Singaporean heiress Arissa clearly spared no expense when it came to their wedding celebrations, which took place in the most ostentatious of manners in two different countries. The gown Arissa wore for their vow exchange in the States was nothing short of spectacular, with a jagged-looking hem that lent a bad girl touch to an otherwise prim and princessy ensemble.

Out of all the dresses she wore at the banquet back in Singapore (judging from a quick scroll through social media pictures, she seems to have donned quite a few), we like this elegant embroidered eggplant number the most, simply because its peplum is so delightfully over-the-top. Well, if we were having a star-studded wedding at one of the most atas hotels in town, we’d go OTT too.

Vivian Hsu

Doe-eyed Vivian was practically drowning in luxurious organza on her big day in Bali. The custom-made Vera Wang stunner was grand and gorgeous, but not too overwhelming for a cliff-side resort shindig. Also custom-designed were her silver Sergio Rossi heels, which were adorned with her English initials and embedded with blue rhinestones as part of the “something borrowed, something blue” bridal outfit tradition.

But it is the dress on the right, which she wore for a couple of her more whimsical wedding photos with Mickey Mouse ears, that packs a bigger punch in our scarlet-loving books. Big, bold and in bright, unabashed red, it’s like the loud, cheeky and rebellious sister of the more demure white one that wants to party hard.

Stefanie Sun

Our very own singing superstar wore two very different kinds of gowns on her special day: an unadorned sheath with pearls around her neck, and a long-sleeved, high necked ball gown that looked very much like the one Hollywood legend Grace Kelly wore when she married into royalty.

While the latter clearly had more elements of a show-stopper, we can’t help but be much more enamoured by the much simpler first look. The way everything – including her hair and makeup – is so toned down, but not to the point of being frumpy or devil-may-care in a lazy way, lends a very affable feeling of pretentiousness to the whole look. After all, she already has tons of chances to go all out in the fashion department for her concerts.

Julian Cheung & Anita Yuen

Although Julian Cheung and Anita Yuen wed in 2001, it was only in 2015 that the Hong Kong actress fulfilled her wish of having their wedding portraits taken. For the photo shoot in Seoul, Anita opted for an elegant mermaid cut gown with a lace applique bodice that looks remarkably similar to the wedding dress worn by Kate Middleton. Her dainty tiara completed her romantic bridal look. And two months later, the couple celebrated their union once more with a traditional wedding ceremony in Laos when they participated in Chinese reality show, All Along With You. Guess good things come to those who wait.

Ella Chen

Yes, we love the backless ivory love masterpiece (left) and that dress’ shade of midnight blue (right) deserves to have songs and poems dedicated to it, but what everyone should really be talking about is the tiny red thing the S.H.E member squeezed into to bogey to Beyonce’s ‘Single Ladies’ with her then-new hubby Alvin Lai with (centre). Keep on doin’ your thing, Ella.
