A look at Singapore stars’ style choices on their big day

The showbiz world of our little red dot has seen its fair share of high-profile weddings, including the recent nuptials of Jesseca Liu and Jeremy Chan. On that note, let’s have a look at some of the best fashion and styling choices our star brides made when they said “I do”:

Jesseca Liu

Jesseca wore three distinct looks for her wedding last Sunday (July 16). During the tea ceremony, Jesseca wore a bespoke red cheongsam, which she opted for over a kua as she favoured a modern, yet elegant aesthetic (naturally, Jeremy showed up in a matching outfit). For the beachside segment, she donned a princess-y V-neck, bare-shouldered gown from Galia Lahav (carried by Singapore boutique The Proposal), with floral accents and tulle layers from the waist down. And finally, she changed into another bespoke piece, also by Galia Lahav, which used a mermaid silhouette to show off her slim figure. All in all, a sweet and simple ensemble, for a sweet and simple ceremony. Congrats, lovebirds!

Cheryl wore so many show-stopping gowns during her wedding ceremony and Chinese betrothal ceremony, that that it’s near-impossible for us to pick a favourite. Not only was her silver and gold kua with ornate headpieces a refreshing departure from the usual red kuas, but it was the same one her mother wore at her own wedding more than 30 years ago. At the subsequent church wedding and dinner banquet, Cheryl wore two Vera Wang gowns and two dresses from Shanghai designers, plus her tiara from Miss Chinese International in 2012.

Jean Danker

After a five-year engagement, DJs Jean Danker and Glenn Ong took their relationship to the next level in an intimate sunset solemnisation ceremony at Sofitel Singapore Sentosa Resort & Spa on Friday. And in true Jean Danker fashion, the 38-year-old opted for a figure-hugging custom-designed V-neck gown from Berta Bridal that showed off her curves (we hear she’s the first bride in Singapore to wear a Berta Bridal gown), while Glenn suited up in a tux from The Bespoke Club. And for the dinner, off came Jean’s detachable tulle train and veil for a more sultry look fit for dancing the night away.

As an unabashed lover of all things pink (check out the description on her Twitter page if you don’t believe us), it wasn’t surprising that the décor for Yvonne’s high-profile gala was saturated in blush tones. What was a little more surprising is that the bride didn’t take a leaf out of Gwen Stefani’s book and incorporate the hue into her gown in some way, but we think her pristine white A-line, from Taiwanese bridal house CH Wedding, was a show-stopper all the same.

It was her second dress of the night, a delightfully poufy piece from the same store, that reflected her favourite shade. However, none of the colours that evening could beat the flush of her natural mummy-to-be glow: Yvonne was five months pregnant when she tied the knot.

Kewei looked every bit like a princess when she officially waved singlehood goodbye just lasy January (well, she has told us that she hopes to sing a Disney song one day). The songbird began her big day in a lace-and-ruffles mermaid gown from The Prelude Bridal (a fitting choice considering the solemnisation took place not far from the hotel pool), then made her grand march-in at the lunch banquet in a gorgeous explosion of tulle and sparkle from Caramel & Co. which, if she had been there, would likely have sent Taylor Swift into a hyperventilating fit. Oh all right, we were probably going crazy over it too.

Although we only have teasing glimpses and a rough sketch of the fiercely private star’s Lai Chan creation to ogle at, this was clearly a simple gown for a simple – and supremely secretive – affair. Business in the front and party at the back, this satin stunner was quite quintessentially Joanne (who has been known for making some daring and baring style choices in the past) while remaining conservative enough for the occasion.

Gerald Koh

987 DJ Gerald Koh celebrated his nuptials with wife Thia Zhi Xin with a travel-themed wedding banquet at The Westin Singapore in February this year, wearing a quirky bright blue checked suit and polka dot bow tie, which the missus picked out for him. An unconventional choice for a wedding but we can’t help but love how well it goes with the wacky theme and Cinderella-inspired gown he picked for his bride (they are both huge Disney fans). How cute!

We must say, for a couple who is now happily broadcasting their new life with their bundle of joy Aden, “Kandie” were really hush-hush about their surprise nuptials – we can’t even find a proper photo of Kate’s lavender frock! That said, we applaud her unconventional choice of colour, and we are awarding full marks to her makeup artist for bestowing that divinely fresh-faced look, accented only with a stunning scarlet lip, upon her mien.

We’re also rather fond of Andie’s leather-sleeved jacket, but did he tuck out his white shirt on purpose?

Jade Seah

When Jade tied the knot with Terence Lim last January, she stopped us dead in our tracks with her vintage-style lace wedding gown. She looked effortless and her fuss-free and laidback personality was reflected in her custom gown by Calla Bridal – it was simple yet elegant, sexy without being too revealing. And the colourful floral applique gown from Time Taken To Make A Dress that Jade wore to her lunch reception to match the whimsical floral theme of the wedding was perfection.

Another bride who wanted something a little more conservative (she wanted to “hide her flaws”) for her big day was YES 933 DJ Siau Jiahui. Although the gown was a little more covered up with its high neckline and cap sleeves, the blinged-up ball gown, with its voluminous tulle train, was nothing short of show-stopping.

Peifen looked like she had stepped right out of a magical garden full of sprites and pixies in her florally Flamingo Bridal and WhiteLink beauties, one in traditional white, and the other in a very Disney’s Cinderella shade of powder blue. All twee-ness aside, we think both dresses were a perfect fit for the deejay’s bubbly personality, but at the same time, held just enough girly grandeur for the occasion.

We’d also like to make a special mention of her hubby Wei Xiang’s unusual choice of colours for his suits – we doubt many folks often spot tuxes in those shades of grey and brown (if at all), but he pulled both palettes off with great finesse.

Candyce Toh

Candyce completely skipped bothering with the eternal battle between an updo and letting your hair down, opting instead for a completely unconventional and utterly adorable mane that made her look like the character in a whimsical Tim Burton-directed fairytale (she’s even wearing a mini crown!).

We’re glad the Project SuperStar 2005 finalist kept in mind that her hairstyle alone would command a fair amount of attention when she chose her dress, which, while far from plain, is clean-cut enough to avoid an unflattering clash with her curls. Also, since a mullet skirt presents the perfect opportunity to flaunt your gams and kicks, intricate and shiny shoes were the order of the day. We approve 100%.

Jacelyn Tay

A star-studded wedding calls for a gown from a designer to the stars, which is why we think The Link Wedding made the perfect call when they specially ordered this ethereal, fabric flower-adorned Vera Wang for Jacelyn, who became the first bride to be seen wearing the exclusive creation.

Halfway through the evening banquet, Jacelyn replaced the white horsehair bow on her waist with a sleek black one, and we have to say, while we loved the dress before, we loved it even more after, as the new monochrome contrast made for a more striking, elegant image.

Fann and Chris certainly did not disappoint with the garb for the celebration of their nuptials, which was undoubtedly the wedding event of the year. They looked to have drawn inspiration from Bollywood royalty, with Chris in a smart long ivory coat (that showed off his tan) and Fann in a dazzling custom-designed Bally gown reportedly worth $300,000.

Well, if there’s any couple who can dare to be different, it’s the Brad and Angelina of our little red dot, and dare to be different they did.
