It’s that time of year again – when the stars doll up (or suit up) for the annual Star Awards. And boy, were our prayers answered this year: the artistes actually broke out of their comfort zone, fashion-wise. We’re talking bling, couture, and even the infamous “naked” dress style.

While some of the looks were more successful than others, we’ve got good news for everyone deemed “not hot” – you still have a chance to redeem yourselves next Sunday.

See the best and worst looks here:

Joanne Peh and Qi Yuwu

Joanne and Yuwu are #DateNightGoals for parents everywhere. We love the iridescent pewter sheen of Joanne’s Peter Langner gown – and how lovely does it look against her burgundy lips and hair? Likewise, Yuwu’s Ermenegildo Zegna tux complements his wife’s gown, without being grossly matchy-matchy.

And first up in the line of “naked” dresses is Jeanette’s delicate Valentino gown, which looks like it came straight out a fairytale.

Maybe it’s the overly hot weather as of late, but this shiny Pleatation gown seriously reminds us of car sun shades.

Andie Chen

Andie Chen

Yikes, it looks like Kandie really dropped the ball this weekend – not only does Andie’s Harry Styles-circa-2013 hair look a little overdone, but his denim shirt and dark salmon coat look way too casual for the red carpet.

Verdict: NOT

Zoe Tay

The red carpet has nothing on the regal-as-always Ah Jie, who stepped out in a scarlet Valentino gown.

Belinda Lee

Belinda told us backstage that she wanted to look beautiful this year, and she certainly fulfilled her wish – she struck just the right balance between sweet and sexy in her figure-hugging Tony Ward Couture gown and Bvlgari jewels.

Verdict: HOT

Carrie Wong

Carrie Wong

Oh, dear – this entire look, from the “just out of the pool” extensions, to the overdone makeup, to the wobbly shoes just screams awkwardness. While we like the colour of her Alice & Olivia dress, the long frills make it look like something we would wear on a beach holiday (at least it matches her hair?).

Verdict: NOT

Carrie Wong: After-show outfit

Okay, so the overly thick makeup looks even more stark against her white top, but Carrie looks a hundred times more sleek in this simple getup (and with her real hair) than in her previous outfit. In a backstage interview, Carrie told us that her hairstylist had given her extensions during the show because longer hair suited the blue dress, but that during next week's show, she would be "back to the very handsome me" in her short hair and a two-piece outfit.

Verdict: HOT

Rebecca Lim

18 Apr 2016

Rebecca Lim

Rebecca’s Ashi Studio dress and short fringe look like they came straight out of a Tim Burton film, but we have to admit that this odd getup is a welcome departure from her usual pretty, but unadventurous red carpet looks.

Verdict: WEIRDLY HOT

Rui En

18 Apr 2016

Rui En

Er, did Rui En and Rebecca switch styles? While the normally sweet Rebecca went goth, Rui En, who wore Romona Keveza, shed her usual vampy sensibilities for a look that conveyed innocence and new beginnings.

Sheila’s brightly-coloured Ralph Lauren gown was a joy to behold amidst a sea of blacks, whites, blues, and nude shades.

Sorry, Shaun, this D Squared suit jacket might be perfectly tailored, but sand really isn’t your colour – it gives your complexion a weird yellowish tinge.

Jayley Woo

Even our grandmothers would be hard-pressed to wear this gown, which looks like it came straight out of a horror movie set in the 1800s.

Felicia Chin

Felicia Chin

All right, we know that it’s been unbearably humid lately, but this is the Star Awards, not the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show. Behind the scenes, Felicia said that despite being a bit shocked at first when she saw this dress, why not try something new in 2016? However, this change might have been a bit much, because like the bashful Elvin Ng, we're not really sure where to look -- and Felicia herself seemed a little uncomfortable wearing something so revealing. Thankfully, she changed out of her see-through Paolo Sebastian dress before the show begun and seemed much more at ease in her second outfit.

Verdict: NOT

Felicia Chin

Felicia Chin

Felicia’s black Tony Ward gown was a vast improvement – we loved the contrast between the black fabric and her emerald jewels. (The deep-fried hair was a little frightening, though. We can only imagine how much conditioner she’d need later to remedy the damage).

Verdict: HOT

Jesseca Liu

Jesseca wore one of our favourite looks of the night: a Tony Ward Couture gown that was half lingerie, half warrior princess.

Julie Tan

Julie Tan

Julie’s white Romona Keveza bridal gown wasn’t exactly exciting, but hey, it wasn’t offensive, dowdy, or too revealing either. Here’s hoping we see her in something a little more adventurous next Sunday.

Verdict: HOT BUT BORING

Chen Hanwei

Not one to miss a trend, Hanwei ALSO rocked the “naked” look, telling us backstage that he wasn’t wearing anything beneath his lacy white shirt. Er, at least he had a jacket to keep him warm?

Verdict: HOT, for the hilarity

Liu Lingling

Where would this gallery be without Liu Lingling’s Getai-inspired outfit? Poor Alfred Sim and Tay Kewei were stuck sitting behind her enormous headpiece, which was only slightly less absurd than her green lipstick and eye makeup.

Verdict: NOT

The spunky host jumped aboard the “naked dress” bandwagon in this Pois Boutique number, but up close, the fabric looks a little cheap.

Zhang Zhenhuan, Elvin Ng, Romeo Tan, and Xu Bin

We’ve got a pretty uneven lineup of looks here. First off, we have Zhenhuan, whose perfectly coiffed hair and threadbare jacket gave us some unwelcome cognitive dissonance (NOT HOT).

And then there’s Elvin, who could have used some of Zhenhuan’s hair gel, but who is perfectly adequate in a suit from Dolce & Gabbana (HOT).

We’ve got Romeo, who was hot, but boring, in his suit from Dolce & Gabbana.

And finally, Xubin, who looked kind of dad-like from a distance, but who morphed back into his “Prince Charming” self when we realised that he was wearing a leather jacket (HOT).

Guo Liang and Quan Yifong

Guo Liang:

Sorry, guys, but we’re going to do the unthinkable and go back on our word about velvet jackets looking ugly 100 per cent of the time – because far from resembling Hugh Hefner, Guo Liang actually looks dapper and refined in his navy blue jacket. Maybe he carries it well, or maybe it’s the colour, but we’re slightly more convinced that there’s a place on the red carpet for this otherwise old-fashioned textile.

Verdict: HOT

Yifong:

Yifong looked amazing, even queenly, in her lacy black Nicolas Laville Couture gown – the “naked torso” look suits her well!

Verdict: HOT

Jeffrey Xu

18 Apr 2016

Jeffrey Xu

We’ve given Jeffrey a hard time in the past for being a little too fashion-forward, but we’ve come to realise that he has a knack for pulling off outfits that would look strange on any of the other Dukes. So we’re giving this magician-esque Dolce and Gabbana with embellished Louboutins a thumbs-up – it wasn’t the handsomest getup, but it was quite charming in its eccentricity.

Verdict: HOT

Shane Pow

Shane Pow

Kudos to Shane for wearing a well-fitted suit this year. We’re not crazy about the paisley and floral prints on his Etro jacket, which look like something we’d see on our grandpa’s pyjamas, but hey, it’s a vast improvement from his oversized, loud-printed suits from the past.

Verdict: HOT

Ian Fang

The fact that Jeannie was able to change into this many outfits within minutes was pretty impressive, but not as impressive as her ability to stand up straight with a giant donut strapped to her back.
