How to customise everything from the dress, to the flowers, to the venue

Inspiration: The Dress
It doesn’t have to be expensively bespoke, and it definitely doesn’t need to come as part of a pricey wedding package with dresses and services you don’t need. It doesn’t even have to be all-white — pops of colour, like on a ribbon, are fab. Check out these off-the-rack beauties under $600.

The Flowers

A rustic and ‘messy’ style, succulents and exotic blooms are the way to go for bridal bouquets with a difference. Says Ng Yi Lian of Yi Lian Ng Floral Atelier, “It’s about being unexpected. Steer away from the typical bouquets that are entirely made up of roses and peonies. Use unconventional flowers like proteas. Not only are they more ‘hipster’ options, they are available all year round and are sturdier than other flowers, so there’s no worry about them not lasting the entire wedding day!”

The Venue

The more rustic and off the beaten track, and the less like your typical hotel ballroom, the better, when it comes to hipster wedding venues. Reject run-of-the-mill hotel packages and customise your dream wedding with cool decor, invites, food and wedding favours. Going a la carte will likely be more work (and sometimes money), but your guests will be talking about and Instagramming your wedding for weeks.

Pictured above: Wheely cool - Wheeler’s Yard, a spacious industrial-chic café cum bike workshop, has already hosted several hipster weddings. Venue rental starts from $5,000 (only available from Tues-Thurs).

The Cake

Nothing says hipster more than bunting and typography. Get a plain cake with a bit of gold and frosty dusting (those overwrought cream confections are so mainstream!) and stick a cake bunting on it, or a typography cake topper, like this one from OhDierLiving ($27.60; search for OhDierLiving on Etsy).
