The amount of money that popular getai singer-host HAO HAO has splashed out on his 3,000 stage outfits is surely enough to buy a brand new car.

The Moneymaker: Getai singer-host, Hao Hao

Hao Hao, 34, started his career as a getai performer here in 2007. The Singapore-based Taiwanese singer, whose real name is Cheng Shih-wen, made a name for himself in the getai scene for his OTT and flamboyant dressing. He also played a supporting role in Ch 8 drama I’m In Charge, and currently, is duking it out with other getai performers on Ch 8 singing competition GeTai Challenge.

HOME IS: He lives alone in a five-room flat in Sengkang that he rents for $2,500 per month.

HIS RIDE IS: A chauffeured car for gigs, and cabs on his own.

WHAT’S IN HIS WALLET: $500 cash and one VISA ATM card. “I’m not tech-savvy so I usually use cash. And my mum taught me to carry more cash in my wallet for emergencies,” he says. He also carries five amulet cards for protection and coins in foreign currency for good luck.

$10,000: HOW MUCH HE SPENDS ON OUTFITS... EACH TIME. “I own over 3,000 costumes. I make two big batches during Chinese New Year and the Seventh Month — each time there are about 28 outfits and it costs $10,000. I tailor my costumes in Taiwan, Malaysia, China and Thailand. I dare not calculate the exact amount ’cos I would really feel the pinch! A lot of my friends borrow clothes from me for costume parties. I have so many costumes that my friends told me I should open a costume rental shop, or auction and sell some of them. But I spend so much money on them that I can’t bear to sell them off at very cheap prices.”

$20: HIS FIRST PAYCHEQUE. “After I came out of the army in Taiwan at 22, I had to take on numerous jobs. I scored a regular gig at a Western restaurant, but was paid only NT$500 (S$20) for a 45-minute performance. I also sang at many Red Envelope Clubs where my salary comes solely from red packets. I ended up borrowing money from colleagues to tide through that period. Things changed when my agent went to Taiwan to look for singers to perform at the NTUC Club [in Singapore]. That’s how I got into the getai scene here.”

$8,000 TO $9,000: HOW MUCH HE EARNS IN A MONTH NOW. “I don’t have a stable income ’cos we get paid on a gig-by-gig basis. There are months where I don’t get a single gig, whereas during the Hungry Ghost Festival, we get gigs every day.”
