‘Our Homeland’ looks we’d wear today

I must admit, I have a penchant for vintage fashion and for the past five weeks, the third and final installment of The Journey series, Our Homeland, had me tuning in as much for the clothes as for an entertaining history lesson on Singapore. While most outfits looked seriously dated (sorry guys, Beatles hair and bell bottoms are not it) and, for the lack of a better word, obiang, some of the looks weren’t very far off from what we wear today. Here are my favourites.

‘Our Homeland’ finale airs tonight (Aug 26) at 9pm on Channel 8. Watch the full series of The Journey on Toggle.

Rui En's red and white checkered shift dress is too cute for words. It is mod yet modern and the rattan handbag is an adorable addition to the look.

If someone told us that Felicia’s navy dress was purchased at a modern store a few days ago (instead of being used in the wardrobe of a period drama), we would totally have believed them - the geometric prints and silhouette give it a contemporary edge that’s fresh and not outdated.

Jumpsuits are huge these days and this Chevron monochromatic print and toga cut add sass and chic to the one-piece. We can totally picture Lush 99.5 FM DJ Rozz rocking it.

Okay, we must admit, we have a thing for polka dots and self-tie shoulder straps - they add a fun and girly dimension to the outfit, while the length and cut of this frock make it chic enough for work.

Like polka dots, stripes are timeless and we love how these navy and white ones lend a nautical vibe to Rebecca Lim’s dress, while the red accents complete the look.

We love Rui En’s usual dark, vampy look on red carpets, but we adore her in minimal makeup, a slick ponytail and a peter pan-collared frock in delightful colours that remind us of a fun fair’s pretty lights.

This right here, ladies and gentlemen, is undeniable proof that the classic tuxedo makes a man look good, whether he’s from the 60s, 80s, or right now.

The first thing that came to mind when we saw Rebecca Lim’s dress was “that would have been perfect for the National Day Parade!” Okay, patriotic thoughts aside, this is a great way to wear red and white stripes without looking like a candy cane.

We have major style crush on Cheryl Wee's jacket! The Aztec pattern, which has been the rage for the past year, gives the jacket an edge and the metallic appliques add a modern accent to the jacket.

It’s hard to go wrong with big buttons and gentle green hues, as the rookie actress effectively demonstrates here. We kinda like the leather satchel too!

This navy chiffon pleated number is a feminine and timeless addition to any wardrobe and we love how the bag gives a pop of colour to the outfit.
