Expert Insight: Lani Chan, Head Buyer

Club 21 head buyer Lani Chan has been buying for the local luxury multi-retailer for years and her wealth of experience is evident in her buys for the many brands she handles every season. “Our customers tend to look for exquisite fabrications when they shop,” says Chan. This season, some of the exciting collections to look out for are the more directional Club 21 brands like Comme des Garçons, Junya Watanabe, Marni and Dries Van Noten. “These brands champion artistry and workmanship that the Club 21 consumer understands and resonates with when building their seasonal and everyday wardrobes.”

Tom Ford

Expert Insight: Geraldine Laborie, Senior Brand Manager

You would think that for a fairly conservative Asian country, marketing the Tom Ford brand (the designer that some hail as the “King of Sex”) could prove to be rather tricky. But according to senior brand manager Geraldine Laborie: “The Tom Ford woman (here) is not conservative! Based on my prior international experience in Europe, Middle East and Asia, words like conservative and safe does not exist when buying for the Tom Ford brand.” Laborie’s key concern when buying for our tropical climate is that the fabric may not be geographically suitable, so she always pays extra attention to select more lightweight materials for the local rack.

Expert Insight: June Ngan, Regional Ready-To-Wear Manager

“You look at an item and you almost know who it is for,” says June Ngan, the regional ready-to-wear manager at Hermès. Indeed Ngan has developed a profound knowledge of the Hermès customer, having worked for the luxury French label for 11 years. In a house famed for its exquisite selection of leather, be it calfskin or exotics, Ngan has seen a surge in the local customers’ demand for these high-quality pieces in ready-to-wear, too. "Our leather offer grows with every season and has expanded to cover not just jackets and pants, but also coats and dresses. For a few seasons now, we have also invested in exceptional pieces such as double-face cashmere for Spring/Summer, mink coats and crocodile jackets.”

Michael Kors

Expert Insight: Carrie Lee, Brand Manager

Since Michael Kors opened up its first boutique here four years ago, brand manager Carrie Lee noticed a marked difference in her customers’ buying pattern. “Over time, I find our customers have become more knowledgeable and sophisticated, and are more confident in expressing themselves through fashion.” While the American brand has its steady pool of regulars who buy “safe” and classic pieces every season (shirts or jersey dresses), there are also those who, according to Lee, have “evolved” as Michael Kors customers. “They are not as interested in what’s safe. They would rather spend on something more stylish (but classic at the same time). It’s all about quality pieces to update their wardrobes and thankfully for us, we have new merchandise arriving in stores every month,” says Lee of this “new wave” customer.

Expert Insight: Gena Teo, Brand Manager & Head Buyer

Gena Teo has been buying for the Italian brand for years and her approach is usually safe and conservative. Top of the list always includes lots of the house’s signature paisley-printed ladies’ silk shirts. “They suit all ages and work with most of our clients’ lifestyles.” However, depending on the season and looks, sometimes Teo does indulge in some more outré pieces. This season, it was the fully beaded jacket. “The cropped denim jacket with beautiful beading detail is a piece that different age groups can relate to and will take you glamorously from this season to the next,” says Teo.

Expert Insight: Lupe Puerta, Global Head of Personal Shopping

As the global head of personal shopping for one of the world’s most prolific luxury e-tailers, Lupe Puerta’s core business is all about building relationships. For 10 years, Puerte has travelled the world attending fashion shows, season after season, understanding the trends and identifying the different needs and expectations of her customers and then providing them with her expert recommendations. “We work very closely with our buyers. After the shows, our personal shoppers travel to the showroom appointments. We know our customers so well so we are quite spot-on on what will sell that season.”

Puerte heads her team of 25 personal shoppers — based in Hong Kong, London and New York — who look after their pool of loyal customers. She also candidly reveals a buying pattern that is universal. “You would think in this part of the world, they’ll love this and in another part of the world, it’s something else…but actually, everyone wants the same pieces.”
