TRAVEL PHILOSOPHY: “I like to experience local culture whenever I’m travelling.”

RESEARCH OR WING IT? “I’m someone who wings it. I won’t have a specific list of places to visit, but I know the general areas I want to cover. I like to ask the locals for tips on where to go when I’m at my destination.”

LONE WOLF OR WOLF PACK? “Both. The people we travel with can make or break a trip. This is why it’s important that the company is good when I travel, especially in a tour group. I’ve been on tours to Korea with my parents and didn’t really have fun ’cos the tour group and I didn’t share similar interests. I like travelling alone too. I get to do things at my own pace. But I’ve only travelled alone once in my life and that was to Los Angeles three years ago. I needed some alone time, and decided to go to LA ’cos I read a lot about its laidback culture. I ended up shopping a lot, visiting cafés and attending yoga classes (laughs). Melrose Place is my favourite. I spent most of my days sitting in a cafe reading a book and people-watching. People in LA are nice. They don’t stare at me when I eat alone, whereas we get that a lot in Singapore (laughs). Since most of the locals drive and public transport was not accessible, I ended up walking almost everywhere.”

BEST INSTAGRAMMABLE CITIES: “It’ll have to be Nice (above). They have amazing beaches with black sand. I went there last October with Contiki Tours and we also visited Paris and Lucerne. Paris is nice; their rustic walls are great photo opportunities! I’ve been to Paris thrice before and had visited its more touristy spots like the Galeries Lafayette. As cheesy as it sounds, the Eiffel Tower is always magical for me! There’s nothing like seeing it up close. I had lunch at a restaurant located on the tower. It cost about $400 to $500 per person, but I’m not sure if the experience was worth the price (laughs). The food was good, but not great. I paid more for the scenery and experience!”

STAY CONNECTED OR GO OFF THE GRID? “I definitely keep in touch with my family and friends. I’d contact my family just to let them know I’ve arrived safe and sound, or share with them the sights. I usually sign up for data-roaming, and [free] Wi-Fi where available.”

HOW TO BE STYLISH ON THE GO: “Since we have to sit for a long time on flights, I tend not to wear clothes that crease easily. Polyester or knits are good choices, as they don’t wrinkle as much as fabrics like cotton. I’d go with a knit maxi dress ’cos it’s comfortable, keeps me warm and I don’t have to worry that it will crease. I’d recommend knit tops for guys too — they’re easily available from shops like Uniqlo. I also choose clean-cut outfits so I’d look more polished.”

WORST WARDROBE CRISIS ABROAD: “I once burned a hole in my dress while ironing it in Paris. I’d borrowed an iron from my hotel, but I wasn’t familiar with the local electrical settings and accidentally set the heat too high. It was awful! Thankfully, the dress wasn’t expensive and I just made do with other clothes I had brought along. That experience taught me to pack at least two spare outfits, in case something happens to my clothes again (laughs). I also bring along a portable steamer that’s safe for delicate clothes.”

NEXT DESTINATION: “I haven’t been to South Africa, but I’d love to visit the safaris there. A few of my friends have been and they came back with great photos, so I’ve been meaning to go there and experience it myself.”
