10 must-eats in Upper Thomson

Residents in the vicinity know it all too well; the turnover in Upper Thomson is brutal. New restaurants and cafés pop up all the time here, but many close down in a matter of months, unable to prise customers away from the more established joints in the area.

The merciless competition does, however, mean that only the very best places survive in these parts, so check out this Thomson-dweller's recommendations for the best grub in his 'hood!

Pasta J

Food is taken seriously at Pasta J. The owners are firm about not cutting corners, so your food might take a little while to arrive, but, take it from us, it's worth it. Try their signature Punchy Pesto (lovingly made with 15 premium ingredients) served with crackers ($6.50), or give in to temptation and take a whole jar ($19/35) home!

Mains-wise, the Caramel Carnivore ($16.90), which features caramelised onions, juicy, hand-made pork meatballs, and spaghetti, is delicious. A small shot of cream is also served alongside the dish, for you to make it as rich as you like. Pasta J's Striploin ($29.90) and hearty soups ($5.90), generously thickened with beef and pork, are delightful. We also heard that stars from The Noose filmed here once, tried the food, and haven't stopped popping in since.

Daawat Tandoori

A modest, unpretentious restaurant right beside Pasta J, Daawat Tandoori's one of the best places in town to get delicious North Indian food without breaking the bank. Daawat’s smooth, rich Butter Chicken comes at $13.50 for a decent-sized portion that can be shared by two. Enjoy it with their hot Naan Bread baskets ($2.50 to $4), and be sure to add on their Palak Paneer ($9.50), a delicious dish of creamy spinach and cottage cheese. Their Tandoori tikkas are also smoky, aromatic, and absolutely gorgeous.

Spice Sutra

If Daawat gets too crowded in the evenings, and you want a quieter, slightly more romantic setting for superb Indian food, head to Spice Sutra across the road. They do mouthwatering, flavourful biryanis, the chicken ($15.90) and mutton ($16.90) varieties both sumptuous standouts. Their thick, savoury Rogan Josh ($17.90), a boneless mutton curry, is also delicious. End with their sublime Gajar Halwa ($6.50), a rich, sweet traditional Punjabi pudding with grated carrots.

Meng Kitchen

Ahh, Meng's. One of the true stalwarts of the Thomson area, this hugely popular 24-hour eatery has been serving up steaming bowls of Bak Chor Mee since time immemorial. It might not be the island's best Bak Chor Mee ($4.50, here called Mushroom Minced Meat Noodle, served with your choice of mee pok, mee kia and so on) but the springy noodles are always comforting, along with their signature large, juicy meatballs, minced pork and a good ol' dose of chili and vinegar. Perfect for that late night Bak Chor Mee craving.

Pacamara Boutique Coffee Roasters

White-walled and spotless, the infinitely Instagrammable surroundings of Pacamara always yield a delicious cup of joe (try The White, 5oz. for $5) and some pretty yummy food, too. The Oven-Baked 5-Cheese Macaroni ($18) is to die for, arriving at your table piping hot, bubbling and gooey with cheese, large chunks of honey ham, and is laced with a hint of truffle oil. The Truffle Benedict ($18) with poached eggs, ham and hollandaise sauce is always a safe bet here, too. End off with a melt-in-your-mouth Lemon Yuzu Tart ($7); sweet, impossibly light, the sour yuzu zest topping pairs perfectly with the cool, creamy lemon filling. The taste will linger even as you reluctantly leave Pacamara's premises.

Beegurt

One of Thomson's little secrets, this tiny, out-of-the-way frozen yoghurt place serves up the best honeycomb-yoghurt combination I've ever tried. It's sensational. Go for the Beegurt Special ($6.80), yoghurt with two toppings and a generous portion of chewy, sticky New Zealand raw honeycomb. Milky, sweet, with gorgeous golden honey drizzled over everything; duck out of that crazy llaollao queue and come to Beegurt instead. You won't regret it.

Sinrihan Kitchen

A new kid on the block, it remains to be seen if Sinrihan Kitchen will defy the odds and stick around, but I'm definitely hoping it will. Serving up a delectable fusion of Japanese and Korean cuisines, there's plenty to try here. Give the Omu Rice ($9.90) a go. Savoury, flavourful rice with juicy slices of mushroom, topped with a perfectly soft, silky egg, the dish comes with crispy pieces of Korean fried chicken. There are also various Korean chicken rice specials available from $4.50 which you can pick up to go, or check out their signature Collagen Soup, which is lovingly brewed for 8 hours! Open till 1am, this is another late-night place that's well worth a late-night drive.

The Roti Prata House & Casuarina Curry

Thomson-dwellers have it good when it comes to prata; we get to choose from these two venerable establishments. If you haven't already visited both, Prata House deep-fries their prata till it's sinful and crunchy; while Casuarina favours the softer and stretchier sort. Prata preferences are deeply personal, but for what it's worth I'm fond of the Coin Pratas at Prata House, while Casuarina does a mean Cheese-Egg with good curries. Prata aside, there's some pretty decent Nasi Goreng at Prata House (and an awesome Milo Chino Ice too).

Fatboy's Burger Bar

Now a beloved chain with outlets in Singapore, Malaysia, China, and Cambodia, good old Upper Thomson is where it all started for Fatboy's, back in 2009. The winning formula? Delicious burgers at decent prices! The Fat Basterd ($19.80) is the massive signature here, crammed with two thick beef patties. I'm particularly partial to the Bolly Wooly ($12), a juicy hunk of lamb slathered with curry remoulade, and the Mahalo ($12.50), a pork patty stuffed with bacon and topped with cheese, creamy mayo, caramelised onions, and grilled pineapple. Vegetarians, fret not, the Big Bello ($11.80), a juicy portobello burger, is sensational too. Indulge with a shake on the side; they're a bit pricey at $7 each, but (fat)boy, do they hit the spot.

Salted Caramel

A bona-fide Upper Thomson success story, Salted Caramel made its debut in 2011 and has been doing a roaring trade ever since (even after Udders opened up next door a couple of years ago, kicking off the most delicious turf war ever). At $3.60 per scoop and featuring all-natural ingredients, Salted Caramel is one of the best ways to end a trip to Thomson. The delicious, salty-sweet creaminess of their signature flavour aside, the Rum and Raisin, Earl Grey and Horlicks Tim-Tam are all excellent. They roll out new flavours every now and then (two of their newest, Yuzu Ginger and Moscato, are superb), so head back soon! Just like the rest of Upper Thomson, there's usually a new, sublime surprise waiting for you here.
