1. Pandan Kaya with Roasted Macadamia Nut Mooncake (8 DAYS PICK!)

$54.50 FOR EIGHT ASSORTED MINI ONES
Antoinette, two outlets including #02-33/34 Mandarin Gallery, S238897. Tel: 6836-9527. Available till Sept 27.

A silky layer of rice flour skin hugs a heart of pandan kaya mixed with white lotus paste and chunks of macadamia nuts. There are more exotic French-Asian flavours in the box too, like Osmanthus Marble with Goji Berry and Chestnut with Marrons Glacés (candied chestnuts).

WHY WE LIKE THIS: A lovely take on our beloved local breakfast spread, with an added crunchy texture. Tasty marriage of sweet, lemak, nutty, and earthy flavours.

2. Baked Skin Leaves of Curry Salted Egg Yolk Mooncake (8 DAYS PICK!)

2. Baked Skin Leaves of Curry Salted Egg Yolk Mooncake (8 DAYS PICK!)

$15.50 EACH. The Pine Garden, three outlets including #01-2369, 529 Ang Mo Kio Ave 10, S560529. Tel: 6457-6159. Available till Sept 27.

At first glance, this looks like a regular baked mooncake. But slice it, and it reveals curry leaf-speckled lotus paste cradling a golden orb of salted egg yolk.

WHY WE LIKE THIS: We were skeptical at first, but the mild spiciness of the leaves added depth to the traditional filling, creating an agreeable sweet-savoury contrast. Good for folks who don’t fancy tooth-achingly sugary desserts.

3. Baked Mini Egg Custard Mooncake

$62 FOR EIGHT MINI ONES. Peony Jade, two outlets including Keppel Club M Level, Bukit Chermin Rd, S109918. Tel: 6659-4159. Available till Sept 27.

Styled after the famous baked egg custard mooncake from Hongkong’s The Peninsula Hotel. This is like a non-runny version of liu sha bao.

WHY WE LIKE THIS: A delish confection, even if it’s not as divine as the Peninsula original. The buttery, salted egg yolk-dotted custard reminds us of our fave dim sum bao, albeit with a firmer filling. Smooth, with a good bite.

4. Strawberry Lime Margarita Snow Skin Mooncake

4. Strawberry Lime Margarita Snow Skin Mooncake

$69 FOR EIGHT ASSORTED MINI ONES. Mezza9 at Grand Hyatt Singapore, 10 Scotts Rd, S228211. Tel: 6887-5492. Available till Sept 27.

A beach cocktail masquerading as a mooncake. Stuffed with a strawberry and white chocolate truffle spiked with tequila and lemon puree. It’s one of the new snow skin flavours introduced this year alongside picks like Peanut Butter & Sea Salt Truffle. Packed in a classy box that looks more like a jewellery case.

WHY WE LIKE THIS: A pink, girly number that looks cute and tastes yum — even if it’s more like a sweet-sour rice cake than chewy margarita. It’s only faintly alcoholic, so here’s one ‘tipple’ you can safely savour in the office.

5. Rose & Pistachio Snow Skin Tea Mooncake (8 DAYS PICK!)

5. Rose & Pistachio Snow Skin Tea Mooncake (8 DAYS PICK!)

$66 FOR AN ASSORTMENT OF FOUR. InterContinental Singapore, 80 Middle Rd, S188966.
Tel: 6820-8519/20. Available till Sept 27.

Faintly floral rice flour skin wraps rosewater-scented white lotus paste speckled with crushed rose petals and crunchy pistachio bits. It’s part of a series of four tea-infused snowskin flavours making its debut at InterContinental this year. Another good offering is the rich-tasting Oolong & Black Sesame.

WHY WE LIKE THIS: This is more elegant Japanese mochi than artificial-tasting snow skin mooncake. Intoxicating rose and pistachio (a classic Persian pairing) go together like love and marriage in this velvety treat. Perfect with a cup of hot tea.

6. Pineapple, Lemongrass and Dark Cherry Snow Skin Mooncake

6. Pineapple, Lemongrass and Dark Cherry Snow Skin Mooncake

$33 FOR TWO. Goodwood Park Hotel, 22 Scotts Rd, S228221. Tel: 6730-1867/1868. Available till Sept 27.

Besides the hotel’s famous durian-flavoured creations is this new flavour which looks like a Minion’s favourite food with its cheerful yellow-green hue. Lemongrass-infused pineapple puree mingles with a macerated dark cherry heart, all wrapped up in softly chewy snow skin.

WHY WE LIKE THIS: The ingredients sound like odd bedfellows, but they have chemistry. And it’s not too jelak thanks to its refreshing tartness punctuated with a whiff of lemongrass.

7. Pandan Coconut and Gula Melaka Mini Snow Skin Mooncake

7. Pandan Coconut and Gula Melaka Mini Snow Skin Mooncake

$68 FOR EIGHT ASSORTED MINI ONES. Bakerzin, seven outlets including #01-207 VivoCity, 1 Harbourfront Walk, S098585. Tel: 6438-8700. Available till Sept 27.

Part of the Bakerzin’s Celebration Collection inspired by local desserts. No prizes for guessing that ondeh ondeh is the inspiration behind this one.

WHY WE LIKE THIS: You can’t go wrong with pandan, coconut and gula melaka. Pandan-infused snow skin envelops a smear of lotus paste and — this is the best part — a generous dollop of gula melaka mixed with grated coconut. The sticky palm sugar even oozes a little with every bite — as long as you defrost it from the fridge for at least ten minutes.

8. Mini Red Velvet Snow Skin Mooncake

$62 FOR EIGHT. Wah Lok Cantonese Restaurant, Carlton Hotel Singapore, 76 Bras Basah Rd, S189558. Tel: 6349-1292. Available till Sept 27.

This one’s for all you red velvet cake fiends out there — even though it’s more garish pink than red.

WHY WE LIKE THIS: ’Cos it’s an angmoh cake within a mooncake! Beneath the soft snow skin is a fine sheet of red velvet sponge layered with luscious cream cheese — all held together by a crunchy chocolate-hazelnut core. The tangy cheese cuts the richness nicely.
