1. The Plain Jane

#01-10, 211 SERANGOON AVE 4, S550211. OPEN DAILY EXCEPT WED 10AM-10PM. LAST ORDERS AT 9.30PM. WWW.FACEBOOK.COM/THEPLAINJANECAFE

This 25-seat cafe specialises in Swiss roll cakes, run by a cheery baker named Jane, formerly from the now-defunct ET Artisan Sweets. Incidentally, she’s a distant relation of the boss of the famed Rich & Good Cake Shop on Kandahar St and “grew up eating their cakes”. But unlike Rich & Good’s slender kaya rolls, Jane’s Japanese-inspired ones are plumper, fluffier, and stuffed with “pure vanilla cream”. They also come in mod flavours like the Not So Plain Rolls ($5.90 per slice) in Thai Milk Tea made with cha yen tea from Bangkok and even an upcoming seasonal Sakura. There are house-baked scones ($2.90), too.
