The faeces of the large African mammal - which sports a very long neck and forelegs - is being hailed as a source of fuel in a new sustainable 'green' energy system to be used in western France.

A specialist factory which is set to open in 2017 will transform the manure from giraffes and cows into methane which will be directly pumped into gas lines.

The scheme should create enough power to heat 1,700 households in the area out of a possible 111,000.
