Hottest new faces of GE2015

‘Hot’ and ‘politician’ aren’t words you would expect to find in the same sentence, at least not in Singapore. But over the past few weeks, a few attractive faces have stood out in this General Election’s crop of new candidates - there’s even a former TV personality joining the fray. Charming and photogenic, these new faces have caught our eye but will they be able to capture the hearts of voters? Only time will tell.

Political Party: PAP
Ward: Ang Mo Kio GRC

After several years away from showbiz, former Pyramid Game host Darryl David is back in the limelight as a new People’s Action Party (PAP) candidate contesting in Ang Mo Kio GRC. Tall, charismatic and a familiar face with Singaporeans, his good looks might just help pull the votes there.

Currently the deputy director at Temasek Polytechnic’s School of Design, David believes that the skills he had picked up as a media personality would be useful in serving residents. If elected, the father-of-two, who has been actively involved in grassroots activities and several national committees, says he would champion issues related to childcare and the ageing population.

Political Party: PAP
Ward: Nee Soon GRC

Another recognisable face is animal rights activist Louis Ng, who is the founder of Animal Concerns Research and Education Society (ACRES). The 37-year-old has been volunteering in Nee Soon since 2008, and served in the Chong Pang grassroots organisation under Law and Foreign Affairs Minister K Shanmugam. Ng’s mummy boy looks, as well as his love for animals would certainly appeal to the aunties and ladies. Extra points if he is seen cuddling up to a snuggly animal.

Apart from animal rights issues, Ng says he is keen to work on projects focusing on bringing back the kampong spirit, as well as volunteerism: “I want residents to help fellow residents. It's about empowering people, inspiring them and mobilising them to come forth to serve.”

He Ting Ru, 32

Political Party: WP
Ward: Marine Parade GRC

Lawyer He Ting Ru has been attracting much attention even before she was introduced as a Workers’ Party (WP) candidate for the General Election. Young and photogenic, with the smarts to boot, she has not only been called WP’s answer to PAP MP Tin Pei Ling, but also said to resemble actress Rui En. He, who has lived and worked overseas for several years, joined WP in 2013 and is currently the secretary of the party’s youth wing. She will be contesting in Marine Parade GRC.

Political Party: PAP
Ward: Nee Soon GRC

Joining Ng in Nee Soon is Henry Kwek, who is replacing MP Inderjit Singh in his Kebun Baru ward, which has been moved from Ang Mo Kio GRC. The executive director of private investment and trading company Foodtraco Supplies has been working in grassroots for several years and his charming good looks could just earn him the reputation as an aunty killer.

One of the issues that Kwek is concerned about is the current state of the global economy and he is calling for a government cost-cutting committee to be set up to address the cost challenges faced by local companies.

Daniel Goh, 42

Daniel Goh, 42

Political Party: WP
Ward: East Coast GRC

He’s an associate professor of sociology at the National University of Singapore (NUS) and one of the more promising new Opposition candidates unveiled thus far but 42-year-old Daniel Goh’s reputation took a hit - albeit temporarily - when allegations that he had an extramarital affair with a former student surfaced last week.

Emails were sent to various media as well as the Workers’ Party exposing the alleged affair, which Goh quickly refuted, calling them “baseless allegations”. Though Goh has been making headlines for the wrong reasons, the dignified way he handled the smear campaign could actually boost his election chances. Now we can’t wait to hear what he has to say during the rallies.

Political Party: NSP
Ward:
 Sembawang GRC

Even before the National Solidarity Party (NSP) announced its slate for the upcoming GE, potential candidate Kevryn Lim has been gathering online buzz for her looks and racy photos from her modelling days. Unsurprisingly, many questioned her credibility as a politician but the 26-year-old remains unfazed by the criticism and hopes that people can focus on her capabilities and what she can contribute to society. If elected, the project director at an events management and digital marketing company hopes “to be able to bring out the voices that are not heard today into Parliament”.

Political Party: PAP
Ward: Pasir Ris-Punggol GRC

Joining the Pasir Ris-Punggol GRC is investment director at Temasek Holdings, Sun Xueling, whose demure looks and winsome smile has quickly earned her fans. Sun been helping out in grassroots since 2001 in Buona Vista and Punggol West, said it was her grandmother who encouraged her to join politics so she can help others. The 36-year-old, who has a two-year-old daughter, says she understands the challenges of young Singaporean families, and hopes to push for more support measures for parents.

Joan Pereira, 48

Political Party: PAP
Ward: Tanjong Pagar GRC

Another photogenic face among the new PAP candidates is Joan Pereira. The assistant general manager at Temasek Cares is contesting in the Tanjong Pagar GRC at the coming elections alongside her “sister”, MP Indranee Rajah (pictured centre). We can’t help but be a little envious of residents of the GRC who have had more than their fair share of eye candy - first Lily Neo, then Indranee and now Pereira.

Although she is a political newbie, Pereira, formerly the Director of Family Life & Active Ageing at the People’s Association, has 25 years of grassroots experience and has also been walking the ground with Indranee since last year.

Political Party: SDP
Ward: Bukit Panjang SMC

One of the new faces of the Singapore Democratic Party (SDP) is 34-year-old accounts manager Gerous Khung Wai Yeen. The boyish-looking former navy staff sergeant’s passion for politics was reignited during the 2011 GE and he has been active with the SDP since. Khung says he is contesting the election to push for “alternative policies to make life better for Singaporeans”. Though the party has declined to confirm where Khung will be fielded, he has been seen on a walkabout in Marsiling-Yew Tee GRC where the SDP plan to contest.
