A monkey who took a selfie can not own the copyright to the photo, a US judge has ruled.

Naruto, who lives in Sulawesi, Indonesia, took the snap on tourist David Slater's camera after he set up the tripod and walked away.

But PETA believed that David had exploited the animal and they should "manage the copyright" as they are friends of Naruto.

However, U.S. District Judge William Orrick, said: "I just don't see that it (Copyright Act) could go as broadly as beyond humans."
