The shocking statistic comes as new subjects such as coding are being taught in schools, with one in five parents pretending to know the answers to their children's queries on the topic, before reading up on the subject so as not to appear stupid in front of their kids.

As a result, 36 per cent of parents say they don't feel intelligent enough to help their youngsters out with their computing homework, according to research commissioned by Butlins ahead of their Astonishing Family Science Weekend, leading to the beachside resort company creating parent-friendly worksheets to help struggling mums and dads.
