Who knew our PM was such a social media guru?

Return of the barn owl

Anyone who follows Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong on Facebook and Instagram would know that our PM is quite the social media guru. In addition to posting pictures of himself with other world leaders, or the usual commentary on current events, he also populates his feed with selfies, nature photos, and other heartwarming (nay, adorable) glimpses of everyday life.

The most recent example? This photo of a barn owl roosting in his office, which hearkens back to a photo he posted two years ago. “The owl came to visit us again today. Maybe he is taking shelter from the haze.” (OR maybe it’s an apology letter from the Ministry of Magic, Mr. Lee, as the prolonged haze is clearly a sign that Dementors are lurking nearby.)

When he found an owl in his office

“Found a surprise visitor in my office this morning. A beautiful barn owl had flown into the building overnight, and perched itself comfortably high up out of reach…”

Ah, the owl that revealed PM Lee as quite the animal lover. (Once again, close examination of the owl’s leg would have revealed a note from Hogwarts offering our dear PM a post as the Care of Magical Creatures professor.)

Whoa -- selfieception. This picture, posted on Instagram, shows PM Lee posing with a portrait done by local artist Manuel Francisco.

When he met his doppelganger

In a series of two Facebook posts capturing his visit to Madam Tussauds Singapore, PM Lee asked us to #guesswhoisreal (hey, his hashtagging skills ain’t bad either), before taking a selfie with his wax figure.

When he revealed himself as a huge geek

As if being a social media expert weren’t enough, PM Lee also happens to be programming whiz, having written a Sudoku solver in C++ during his spare time. Impressive! Here's what he wrote alongside the photo:

“The program is pretty basic: it runs at the command prompt, in a DOS window. Type in the data line by line (e.g. 1-3-8---6), then the solver will print out the solution (or all the solutions if there are several), the number of steps the program took searching for the solution, plus some search statistics.

For techies: the program does a backtrack search, choosing the next cell to guess which minimises the fanout.

Here’s a question for those reading the source code: if x is an (binary) integer, what does (x & -x) compute?

Hope you have fun playing with this. Please tell me if you find any bugs! – LHL.”

It’s hard to decide who is the bigger celebrity in this selfie: PM Lee, or Tintin’s iconic canine sidekick.

“Taking a selfie with Snowy (Tintin’s fox terrier), in Ambassador Anil’s home in Jakarta. Snowy is the mascot for the Singapore Embassy in Jakarta’s dog adoption charity drive. As part of #SG50, the embassy is doing an event on Sunday to help stray dogs find new owners,” he wrote on Facebook, before encouraging readers to adopt from local shelters.

No, PM Lee isn't attempting the saranghae pose but trying to “do an ‘A’, as in ‘YMCA’” while cheering on the Team Singapore ambassadors during the SEA Games. Pretty good biceps you've got there sir!
