Police mistook a duvet stuffed full of coconuts for a potentially dangerous device.

Officers in Manchester were alerted to the suspicious-looking package by a member of the public - but it ultimately transpired to be something completely harmless, the Manchester Evening News reports.

Officers manning the GMP Stretford account tweeted: "Reports of a bag of bones in the canal. Found to be a duvet full of coconuts #strangefind."

While the "strong odour" and leaking "white fluid" led the man to think it was something more sinister, he was surprised to learn that it was simply leaking coconuts which had been tightly-wrapped in the bag.
