Breaking news: women have body hair

At least that’s what the organisers of the ‘Girls not plucking their armpit hair’ viral campaign on Weibo have reminded us of late. Over the past couple of days, scores of young women have posted photos of their unshaven arms online, in an effort to subvert conventional standards of feminity while encouraging women to be proud of their bodies.

But they aren’t alone. A growing community of young women from all over the world have been posting photos of their busy – even dyed – armpits all over Tumblr and Instagram. Here are some of the fiercest, most confident ones that we’ve found.

Paraphrased from “Shan shan”: “People asked me why I don’t have my armpit hair. I replied that I’ll get depressed if I do,” she wrote. When someone else asked if she were a cat, she replied that she’s a big cat and that she would get angry if her hair got shaved off.

“In love with my ethereal steven universe mermaid armpits,” wrote user @ast0-trash. Candy-coloured pits are huge over on Tumblr, where many users show their “unwanted” body hair as much love as the hair on their heads.

Tumblr user @zoooweee quoted Kurt Vonnegut: “To whom it may concern: It is springtime. It is late afternoon.” And it’s not every day where we see a woman whose armpit hair matches the background of her photo.

Finally, we’ve arrived at the most famous proponent of busy ‘pits: Miley Cyrus! Miley posted this photo in April to support her new venture, the Happy Hippie Foundation, for vulnerable, homeless, and LGBT youths. “The pink pits are saying, ‘Don’t tell me what to do,’” she told the Associated Press in an interview.
