A "sexy" Merlion?

Since its inception in 1964, the Merlion has become synonymous with Singapore, signifying our country’s roots as a fishing village while embodying the courage and bravery of its people. But not all representations of the Merlion are as dignified as the statue at the Merlion Park. Some are cute, some are awkwardly sexualised, and some are just plain weird.

Okay, let’s start off with one that is slightly better than the rest, albeit flashier. This year’s Miss Singapore International, Roxanne Zhang, chose a Merlion costume to represent our country at the pageant last week, which was held at the Grand Prince Hotel in Tokyo, Japan. The costume isn’t terrible (we’ve seen worse – just you wait), but the Daily Mail compared the feathers at the end of her fish tail to “flaked white fish meat” – ouch.

But hey, anything beats the Merlion costume Miss Universe Singapore, Shenise Wong, wore in 2008, which looks like it was made of materials from the neighbourhood stationery store.

We never thought we’d see the words “burlesque” and “Merlion” in the same sentence, but our very own Sukki Singapora has succeeded in marrying the two to perform one “sassy, sexy American style bump and grind” (as it says on her website).

If you put a cat inside a Merlion costume, does that make it…catception?  But then again, Hello Kitty’s not a cat, she only represents a cat – ah, forget it. Too many mythic thoughts for an otherwise mundane Monday afternoon. The real question is, when will these go on sale again?

You know that scene from Captain America where Steve Rogers steps into the machine as this twig of a man, and emerges as a glistening beefcake? Yeah, that’s basically what happened when Lynette Wu reimagined the Merlion for Gardens by the Bay’s illustrated promos earlier this year, who quickly earned the nickname “Bara Merlion” on Twitter.

Even Thor would be jealous of that eight-pack.

On the other side of the spectrum, ain’t this the squishiest, most cuddly Merlion ever? Supermama’s Merlion Chou Chou has become somewhat of a celebrity on Instagram, having been tagged alongside other Singapore icons, like Marina Bay Sands and SG50 babies.

Wait, wait, wait, Trick Eye Museum – are you telling us that the Merlion swims horizontally, and not vertically? Consider our minds blown. (Well, from a hydrodynamics perspective it does make sense for the Merlion to swim like a fish, but this just looks wrong.)
