Thousands swamp pool during China heat wave

If you think the pool at your condo or neighbourhood is crowded, wait till you see this indoor pool in Sichuan. With temperatures soaring to 35C last Saturday (July 11), some 8,000 swimmers flocked to China’s largest indoor park to escape the summer heat (a tad ironic though, because wouldn’t so many hot bodies dipping in the pool make the water warm?). Known as China's "Dead Sea", the saltwater pool located in Daying county covers a whopping 30,000 square metres, though doing laps or even any swimming would be virtually impossible in this crowd.

Passenger assaults flight attendant on LA-bound flight

A male passenger is under investigation for allegedly assaulting a flight attendant on a China Southern Airlines flight to Los Angeles last week. All was well when the flight took off from Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport but at around 2.40am, passengers were woken up by a Chinese passenger who was shouting, said media reports.

The man hit and yelled at a male flight attendant, claiming that his seat had been taken. He also reportedly threatened cabin crew by telling them that he knew which hotel they would be staying, and was quoted as saying: “Los Angeles has a lot of cars. You’d better watch out for an accident.” The plane’s captain alerted the authorities and the man was detained when the plane landed in Los Angeles.

Mum refuses to break into car to save toddler from heat

A woman has been slammed for refusing to allow firefighters to break into her BMW to save her toddler son from the heat because she didn’t want to damage her car. According to media reports, crowds had gathered around the car in Zhejiang’s Yiwu city after hearing the 3-year-old’s cries for help but were shocked to find the mother standing next to the vehicle doing nothing. The mother had insisted on waiting for the locksmith to unlock the door but when the boy began to faint, firefighters took matters into their own hands and smashed the window.

The singer hit back tweeting: “I want to make it clear that I never threw or would throw the pad.

“It fell by itself through a very sophisticated tunnel! Thank you, I love you.”

Man rents hotel pool for sea lion’s birthday bash

Another Chinese heir has made headlines for splurging on his pet. The son of multi-billionaire Wang Jianlin treated his pet sea lion to a staycation and rented out the swimming pool of a five-star hotel in China’s Qingdao to celebrate its birthday. There, the sea lion was given an all-access pass to the resort facilities and a feast of gourmet food was even prepared for the little guy. He even had his own private chef and butler to wait on him. All this could not have come cheap but guess it was all worth it. The sea lion was so thrilled with his birthday treat that it refused to get out of the pool.

Workers in China go ‘faceless’ on ‘No-Face Day’

To help employees “relax” and “reduce pressure” at work, a company in China’s Hebei province has implemented ‘No-Face Day’, where staff are allowed to wear masks to work. According to media reports, this is will relieve them from the stress of making fake facial expressions.

To encourage anonymity, many chose to wear the same black-and-white mask from the Japanese animated film Spirited Away, while others opted for the Guy Fawkes mask. Sounds practical on paper but wouldn’t this allow encourage crime or allow intruders to sneak in undetected? Food for thought.
