Woman decapitated in lift accident

A woman was decapitated in a lift accident in Hangzhou on Thursday morning, the second tragic death in an elevator in China this week. The 21-year-old was entering the lift on the 16th floor of a residential building when it suddenly moved upwards, trapping her by her neck, local media reported. Firefighters who rushed to the scene found her head on the 17th floor, while her body was seen dangling on the 16th storey.

According to doctors, the woman suffered severe trauma to her neck and showed no signs of life when she was brought to the hospital. Residents of the building said the lift, which underwent maintenance last year, had malfunctioned before. Problems included shaking and dropping suddenly.

Toddler’s arm stuck for 30 mins in escalator

Just a day after a woman died in an escalator accident in Hunan, another accident has occurred. This time, a toddler’s left arm was caught in the stairs of an escalator in a Guangxi mall for 30 minutes.

According to media reports, the one-year-old boy wandered to the escalator when his parents were resting and tripped and fell when he was trying to get on, causing his arm to be dragged into one of the moving stairs. Firemen arrived at the scene shortly and managed to free the boy’s arm, which appeared mangled. He was sent to the hospital immediately for treatment.

Shoppers take extreme precautions when riding escalators

Shoppers have gone to great lengths to avoid the footplate at the end of escalators following a couple of escalator accidents in China this week. Afraid that they will fall through the footplate, people have been seen tapping the plate before stepping on or attempting to leap across it. Some even avoided the plate altogether by stepping round it. But that’s not the worst. There have been extreme cases where paranoid shoppers rode the escalator without even touching the steps.

Woman jailed for assaulting police with breast

A Hong Kong woman has been sentenced to three and a half months in jail for “assaulting” a police officer with her breast. 30-year-old Ng Lai-ying was arrested during a chaotic protest in March where she accused a police officer of molesting her. The officer, however, claimed Lai-ying bumped him with her breast.

The magistrate told the court that Lai-ying had "used her female identity to trump up the allegation that the officer had molested" her, and that he had no choice but to hand down a deterrent sentence or “the public might mistakenly think it is a trivial matter to assault police officers during protests.”

Panda “fakes pregnancy” to get special treatment

She may look all cute and innocent but giant panda Yuan Yuan has reportedly faked her pregnancy in order to receive special treatment in a Taipei zoo.

It is believed that Yuan Yuan noticed she had been provided better living conditions such as an air conditioned room and more bamboo during her last pregnancy and decided to act the same way. The 11-year-old had reportedly shown signs of pregnancy such as loss of appetite and thickening of the uterus since June 11, however, Chinese panda experts determined through an ultrasound that she was not pregnant.

Yuan Yuan, one of two pandas China gifted Taiwan, was artificially inseminated in March. She gave birth to her cub Yuan Zai in July 2013.

Woman tries to kill herself after meeting online beau

A Chinese woman was so disappointed when she met her online beau for the first time on Tuesday (July 28) that she tried several times to take her own life.

According to local media, the 23-year-old woman had one leg over the balcony rail of her seventh-floor hotel room in Heilongjiang and was shouting “You cheated me!” to her ex when police arrived at the scene. After coaxing her to get down, she suddenly swallowed some sleeping pills and even tried to pick up a piece of broken glass to slit her wrist. Fortunately, she was stopped by the police officers and was taken to the hospital for treatment.

Reports said the woman from Jilin province and her boyfriend, who is 10 years’ her senior, began dating shortly after meeting online. Despite her parents’ disapproval of the relationship, she insisted on travelling to Heilongjiang to meet him. While we sympathise with the woman, we can’t help but wonder how ugly the guy is to make her want to end her life.

Passengers storm plane, assault airport staff after flight delay

Four Chinese tourists have been jailed for assaulting ground staff at Hong Kong International Airport after their 8.30pm flight was delayed more than eight hours on Tuesday (July 28). The “uncivilised attack” took place at 2.25am as 225 passengers waited for their Hong Kong Airlines to Beijing, which was delayed due to “adverse weather and air traffic control in Beijing”.

All hell broke loose when one female passenger tried to force her way onto a plane as airport staff tried to stop her. During the scuffle, five other passengers also got physical with the crew, kicking, punching and even pouring water at them. Seven airport staff were reportedly injured during the attack.

Cat left cross-eyed after nasty fall

A cat has been left cross-eyed after falling off a windowsill when it was a kitten. The owners of eight-year-old Ozzy, who lives in Scotland, said the fall probably “dented his head” and left the kitty with tunnel vision - not to mention a striking resemblance to the hypnotised panther Bagheera in The Jungle Book. Though the visual impairment doesn’t hinder Ozzy in the house, he does tend to get lost sometimes when he wanders off outside.

Sichuan residents beat the heat with mahjong in river

Some prefer to seek refuge at indoor pools, others in caves, but these Sichuan residents have found a clever way to escape from the summer heat: “dry swimming” in the river. Rather than swimming, hundreds of people have set up their mahjong tables on the shore of a local river, so they can cool down while entertaining themselves - under the shade, of course. Last year, a “water mahjong” tournament in a Chongqing swimming pool attracted more than 100 tourists.
