Japan scientist creates neon udon

Japan is notorious for all things bizarre, and now a scientist has given the much-loved udon a neon makeover. Food writer Kurare Raku, the brainchild behind the multi-coloured dish, sent the internet into a frenzy when he posted photos of neon pink udon noodles, green broth, topped with blue tofu on Twitter last week.

Though he’s tight-lipped about how the noodles got their colour, it appears to involve colouring the noodles with a special dye, and then shining ultraviolet light onto them in order to produce the special effect. Kurare’s past creations include fluorescent sherbet, poisonous curry. Despite their fluorescent hue, the brightly-coloured udon is believed to taste like regular noodles.

Latest trend in China: Wearing sprouts in your hair

A new fashion trend has, erm, sprouted in Beijing – antenna hair clips. These quirky hair accessories have been spotted everywhere recently, even the men are wearing them because “it is interesting and looks cute”, though it baffles us why a guy would want to look cute in the first place.

Made of plastic, the hairclips come in a variety of designs, from flowers to shrooms and even bean sprouts. From afar, they look like a plant has germinated from the top of a person's head but up close, they look more like antennas, kind of like the Teletubbies. While the origin of the trend is unclear, it is speculated that it might have been inspired by a character in a popular cartoon called Pleasant Goat and Big Bad Wolf.

New magazine in Japan devoted to male nipples

There’s a new magazine in Japan devoted to a rather disturbing subject – male nipples. Titled I Love Everyone! Man’s Nipple, the fan-made magazine was recently distributed at Comiket, a bi-annual comic event in Tokyo, and is available online at Melonbooks. Judging by photos online, the magazine is like nipple porn and is chock full of images of the male anatomy that is popularly deemed to be useless and, erm, ugly. If you need some convincing as to why anyone would want to buy a magazine celebrating men’s nips, here are some testimonials from satisfied customers: “They’re not useless after all!”

“Wow, male nipples are much more powerful than I ever imagined,” wrote another reader.

OOPS: Boy trips in museum and punches hole in painting

A Taiwan boy lived out every museum curator’s worst nightmare when he tripped and punched a hole in a 350-year-old painting at a Leonardo da Vinci exhibition in Taipei. CCTV footage showed the 12-year-old boy stumbling over a rope barrier as he walked past an oil painting by Paolo Porpora called “Flowers”. And when he held out his hand to catch his fall, he accidentally punched a fist-sized hole in the canvas. The artwork, which is reportedly worth US$1.5 million, has been fully restored and back on display.

While the boy will not be made to cover the restoration costs as the painting is insured, we hope he will not be blacklisted from future exhibitions and museums because of this accident.

China tech companies hire cheerleaders to motivate programmers

Chinese tech companies are following in the footsteps of their American counterparts and offering unique benefits to employees – one of which includes personal cheerleaders to motivate them. According to local media, pretty girls are hired to 'create a fun work environment' for employees of Internet companies across the country. Dubbed programming cheerleaders, their job scope includes chatting and playing table tennis with them. "According to the HR manager of a company that has hired cheerleaders, its programmers are mostly male and terrible at socialising," adding that the presence of these girls “have greatly improved their job efficiency and motivation."

Dog totally chill with being stuck in a bush

An adorable dog has become an internet sensation after photos of it being stuck in a bush went viral. Three pictures of the dog, poking its head out of hedge, were shared by netizen Yamamochi223 on Twitter with the caption ‘It’s stuck!’. Despite it predicament, it appears to be enjoying it! The post has since been deleted but not before a netizen commented that the Shibu Inu, a popular breed of dog distinct to Japan, could be a repeat offender: “I’ve seen it do that twice before.”

Cute chicks cover road after truck overturns

A road in China’s Shandong province was swarmed with cute chicks (fowl, not women) when a poultry truck overturned. Thousands of yellow chicks reportedly worth some 500,000 yuan (around S$110,000) spilled on to the expressway, which had to be blocked off so the fuzzy accident victims would not be hit by cars. While they survived the accident, they could not escape the grasp of locals who quickly arrived at the scene and began scooping them by the handful, even traffic police could not stop the looting. We guess the fate of the captives are sealed – it will not be long before they become dinner on a plate.

Teen wakes up in grave after being buried by mistake

This is probably not a story you’d want to read during the ghostly Lunar 7th month. A Honduras teen woke up in her coffin after she was supposedly buried by mistake. Video footage showed Neysi Perez’s grieving family smashing her concrete tomb after the 16-year-old pregnant teen was heard screaming and banging from inside. She was reportedly dead when they opened the coffin, though relatives said her body was still warm. The glass viewing window on the coffin had been smashed and the tips of Neysi’s fingers were also bruised.

She was rushed to the hospital but medics found no signs of life and Neysi was buried again. Doctors believe Neysi had suffered a panic attack after hearing a burst of gunfire when she woke up to use the toilet in the middle of the night.

Waiter pours boiling water on woman after dispute

A waiter at a hot pot restaurant in Wenzhou allegedly poured boiling water over a woman after she complained about his service on Monday (Aug 24). The victim, surnamed Lin, suffered severe burns to her 42 per cent of her body, mainly to her head and upper body.

According to media reports, after Lin got into a heated argument with the waiter, surnamed Zhu, he went to the kitchen, carried a tray of boiling water and poured it over Lin’s head. He then pulled her chair to the ground and began attacking her. Other diners quickly rushed to Lin’s assistance and pulled Zhu away. He has since been arrested and the incident is now under investigation.
