Japan café chain introduces KitKat croissants

Forget coloured burgers, popular Japan café chain Pronto’s KitKat croissants are the new craze in the Land of the Rising Sun. The concept of this tasty treat is simple: bake two wafer candy bars inside the croissants and the result, chocolatey sweetness between the buttery flakes. Offered in two flavours - regular and matcha green tea KitKats - the croissants are available for a limited period only.

This food mashup comes as no surprise as the Japanese love their KitKats - there are at least 15 different flavours of the candy bar including red bean and rum and raisin. Guess we’ll have to make do with toasting our own KitKat stuffed Delifrance croissants until someone brings this to Singapore.

Narcissists can now get into food pics with selfie spoon

It is bad enough that our Instagram feed is inundated with food photos, soon we might have to deal with eating shots, thanks to the selfie spoon. Introduced by Cinnamon Toast Crunch cereal, the Bluetooth selfie stick with a spoon on the opposite end, extends over 30 inches so foodies can capture every mouth-watering bite they eat. The innovative device is available for free at selfiespoon.com, but the bad news is, it’s sold out. But fret not. News of the dual purpose cutlery has probably already reached copycats in China who will get similar ones out in the market before you can say selfie spoon.

Arrow goes through boy’s head in archery range

This is no illusion. An 11-year-old boy has miraculously survived after he was hit in the head with an arrow during archery practice in school. Ritvik Ankush Tarte from Maharashtra in western India had stepped into the ‘No Entry Zone’ and was hit by an arrow. The arrow pierced his skull on the right and exited on the left. Ritvik was rushed to the hospital where doctors removed the arrow in a three-hour operation and is now on the road to recovery. He is expected to return to archery lessons next month.

Chinese official sacked after groping video leaked online

A Chinese government official has been sacked after videos of him molesting a female companion at a local restaurant leaked on social media. Three videos emerged on Sunday (Sep 20) showing Chen Jianming, Deputy Secretary of a local Communist Party in Jiangsu province, attempting to rip off a woman's top and shorts while she sat on his lap. Though she tried to stop him, Chen continued groping her and the pair appeared to be in good spirits, talking and laughing in the videos. In a statement on Weibo on Sep 21, the local government said Chen had “violated the party regulations” and “caused disruptions to society”. It also confirmed that he has been expelled from the Chinese Communist Party.

Woman steals car from showroom after boyfriend refuses to pay for it

This woman sure doesn’t take no for an answer. A Chinese woman threw an epic tantrum and drove off with a luxury car from a showroom in Nanchang, China, when her boyfriend refused to buy it for her.

According to media reports, the woman asked the man to buy the 400,000 yuan (S$90,000) Audi A3 for her and they broke into an argument when he refused. Furious, the woman stepped inside the white coloured vehicle and sped off with it. Her boyfriend managed to grab her handbag while trying to stop her but the unfortunate car salesman was knocked over. It is not known if they later paid for the car or if she was charged with theft.

Miss Italy says her favourite Italian historical figure is Michael Jordan

Miss Italy contestant Alice Sabatini left crowds speechless when she said during an Italian TV show that her favourite ITALIAN historical figure is Michael Jordan. And no, she did not mean Italian sculptor Michaelangelo but US basketball legend Michael Jordan, who was “the greatest player in basketball history”. The faux pas comes a day after the 18-year-old was ridiculed for telling beauty pageant judges she would like to experience World War II “since the books talk about it for page after page.”

“I want to live it. In any case I am a woman so I wouldn't have had to do military service, so I would have been at home with the fear of ...” she said, trailing off with a laugh. Despite this, Alice went on to win the competition and was crowned Miss Italy. Go figure.

No baby panda for Kai Kia and Jia Jia - for now

Despite promising signs and after months of monitoring, River Safari’s female panda Jia Jia will not be delivering a cub this year. Based on scientific data gathered from her behaviours and hormone levels, the birthing window has now passed and panda caretakers concluded that the giant panda is not pregnant.

Jia Jia, who turned seven earlier this month, underwent artificial insemination in April after an unsuccessful mating attempt with Kai Kai. Since July, she was seen eating less bamboo, sleeping more and her hormone levels were increasing - all signs consistent with pregnancy or pseudopregnancy. Giant pandas commonly display pseudopregnancies and experts worldwide are often not able to determine a panda’s pregnancy status until a late stage. To get the pandas accustomed to physical contact with each other, keepers aim to bring the pandas together before the start of the mating season.

Man threatens to throw son off building in bid to stop demolition

A man was so desperate to stop officials from pulling down his home that he threatened to throw his son off the building. Authorities had been trying to demolish the illegal building for two months but to no avail. On Sep 17, a group of around 200 people arrived at the property and tried to force their way into the two-storey building. The man and his family threatened officials with knives and when a wrecking truck began tearing down the structure, the man ran to the rooftop and threatened to throw his five-year-old son down.

Officials tried to negotiate with the man as police scaled the building from the back to secure the man and rescue the boy. The building was successfully demolished after five hours.

Man arrested after 21 pieces of genitalia found in freezer

A Danish man has been arrested after 21 pieces of female genitalia, supposedly kept as trophies, were found in his freezer. Peter Frederiksen, 63, who is living in South Africa, had allegedly drugged his wife and cut off her genitals while incapacitated. According to police, the genitals were from 21 women, one of them his wife, and are investigating who the other 20 victims are. But that shouldn’t be too difficult as Peter, who had openly discussed practicing female genital mutilation in interviews in the past, had kept a record of his victims and the body parts removed.
