Chinese couple’s OTT wedding raises eyebrows

Lavish doesn’t even begin to describe the over-the-top wedding of this Chinese couple, who flaunted their wealth in a dynasty-themed nuptials complete with exotic supercars and stacks of cash and gold. The celebrations held in Sanxiang saw the groom, reportedly the son of a rich business family in Macau, dressed like an emperor while leading a group of best men dressed like ancient soldiers on a street, while the bride, whose dowry was worth several million yuan, was photographed with strings of gold bangles around her neck (and we thought Myolie Wu was bad).

Photos of the wedding, which reportedly cost a whopping 2.8 million yuan (S$612,000) and looked like “something from a film set”, went viral on social media on Monday (Jan 11), with many netizens slamming the newlyweds’ excessive opulence and branding them “tasteless”. One netizen said: "Is this a wedding or Qin Shi Huang's funeral?"

"Money buys neither class nor taste!" commented another.

Man caught with his pants down in Chinatown

A 50-year-old man, who was naked from the waist down, was arrested on Jan 8 for nudity. A video of the incident was uploaded on Facebook by user Shashi Kumar Shashimi. Dressed in nothing but a red T-shirt, the man was filmed standing at the side of the road disrupting the work of some construction workers before slowly making his way across Upper Cross Street, with complete disregard to oncoming traffic. The man then headed to a nearby taxi stand where he knelt in front of a sign post and later hopped onto a cab. Within a few seconds, two police officers arrived at the scene and apprehended the man but not before covering him with a yellow jacket. Investigations are ongoing.

Woman gifts ex with soap made from own fat after being dumped

Remember the classic Fight Club soap scene? Well one Chinese woman has made that into a reality by turning her own fat into soap. Bitter after being dumped for being fat by her ex Yang Xiaolei, Xiao Xiao underwent liposuction and made a bar of soap from her own fat as a gift to him.

“Yang Xiaolei, do you remember last year's Spring Festival? Since I cannot go home with you this year, I've made a piece of soap from my own fat to give to your mum for washing up. Chinese New Year - the time to surprise those low men who can only judge a book by its cover!” wrote Xiao Xiao on Weibo. Her post went viral and Xiaolei was understandably disgusted, accusing the woman of making him look bad on the Internet. While it is unclear if the soap was indeed made of Xiao Xiao’s fat, we don’t have any reason to doubt it considering stranger things have happened in China.

Chinese police turn to poker cards to hunt down fugitives

While some detectives use wanted posters and social media to hunt down fugitives, police in China's Binyang County in Guangxi Province have decided to get creative by printing mugshots on poker cards. A total of 15,000 sets of cards were produced in five different designs and some 3,000 packs have been distributed to the public since Jan 10. In addition to the faces of the 248 suspected fugitives, their gender, ID number, address as well as accused crime are also printed on the cards. Police said anyone with leads to the suspects, who are allegedly linked to Internet-based crimes, will be rewarded 2,000 yuan (S$440).

A Bangladeshi cleaner was crushed to death on Monday (Jan 11) while operating at a waste compacting machine at a waste collection centre at Bedok Reservoir Road. According to media reports, the machine had malfunctioned and when the 37-year-old cleaner, known to his friends as Ali, tried to kick it, he rolled into the waste compactor. The Singapore Civil Defence Force said they found the man "inside the refuse compactor of the centralised refuse chute with no pulse and no breathing". In a Facebook post on Tuesday, Aljunied-Hougang Town Council (AHTC) chairman Pritam Singh expressed his grief for the tragedy and said both AHTC staff and conservancy contractors were assisting the authorities with investigations.

Mumbai thief force-fed 40 bananas to retrieve gold necklace

Mumbai police have resorted to a rather unusual tactic to retrieve a stolen necklace from a thief - force-feeding of bananas. The man, who snatched the chain from a woman on the street, swallowed his loot while fleeing from police. After an emema had failed to dislodge the chain, police force-fed the thief 40 bananas over the course of a day before he finally excreted the loot. However his troubles were far from over. When the chain was recovered, police made him wash and disinfect it. Ugh!

Farmer makes scarecrows that would freak anyone out

Scarecrows, as the name implies, are supposed to scare the crows. However, a Japanese farmer has gone the extra mile and designed them to freak the bejesus out of humans too. And no, throwing on a school uniform does not maketh it kawaii. And don’t even get us started on the row of disembodied heads at the side. This scene looks extremely creepy in daylight, imagine coming across it in the black of night during the Hungry Ghost Festival or any other time for that matter. Shudder.

Mother knits life-size model of son after he refuses to hug her

A Dutch mother deprived of cuddles when her son hit puberty has come up with a rather ingenious way to meet her ‘smother mother’ needs - by knitting a life-size model of her son. Marieke Voorluijs spent two months making the cuddly replica, complete with a cap, headphones and watch. While both her sons lent a hand in the project (anything to get mummy off their backs, right?), they might be disappointed to know that the replica is not a stuffed doll but a wearable suit so one of them has to don it for maximum cuddling. Not such a good idea after all, huh?
