Teacher posts newspaper apology for caning student

A Malaysia teacher has been forced to post a public apology in a local newspaper for not one, but three days, for caning a student. In her newspaper notice published this week, Miss Loh apologised to her student Catherine Thor and her parents and acknowledged that her “excessive punishment” had left seven cane marks on the child’s hands and legs. She also said she would pay for the medical expenses as a result of the injury.

According to China Press, this wasn’t the first time Miss Loh, a tuition teacher from Johor, had used the cane on the primary one student and had previously been warned by the child’s parents. However, the punishment this time was too excessive so they decided to take action.

Unsurprisingly, the public apology sparked much discussion online. While some netizens sympathised with teacher, others questioned whether there was a need to resort to a newspaper apology. There were also some netizens who sided with the child’s parents, saying that the teacher had no right to hit the student.

Teen’s mystery condition causes her to bleed from eyes and ears

A UK teen girl is suffering from a baffling condition that causes her to bleed from her eyes, ears, mouth and even scalp. Marnie-Rae Harvey’s ordeal began in 2013 when she woke up with blood spatters on her pillow and began suffering migraines. Slowly, the bleeding spread to her eyes and even her fingernails and scalp, baffling doctors. It is so bad that the 17-year-old is practically housebound as the bleeding could start at any moment. Her mother said she bleeds as often as five times a day, and Marnie is never left alone in the house. “Every morning I have to shake her to see if she is still alive. It's absolutely devastating. It happens every single day,” she said.

Woman dies in elevator after being trapped for a month

A 43-year-old Chinese woman was found dead by an apartment building’s maintenance workers after she was trapped in an elevator for a month. According to Chinese reports, two lift servicemen failed to properly check if there was anyone inside the faulty lift in the Xian apartment building on Jan 30 before cutting off power supply. All they did was knock on the lift doors, shouting “Is there anyone inside?” Hearing no response, they cut off the power supply and left, returning on 30 days later after the Chinese New Year break to find the woman’s corpse. According to a resident, the woman’s hands were distorted and there were scratches on the wall. Police have found the woman’s death to be due to the “gross negligence” of the elevator company and two men have been arrested and will be facing charges of involuntary manslaughter.

Woman wakes up from coma, accuses ‘loving’ boyfriend of bashing her

He was portrayed by the media as a loving boyfriend who cared for his girlfriend, Lin Yingying, when she was in a coma. But Liu Fenghe went from hero to zero after Yingying woke up eight months later and accused him of causing the injury that nearly killed her, reported Chinese media.

Apparently, the couple used to run a bakery together in Dalian and Yingying, 21, said Fenghe bashed her with a rolling pin after she accidentally burnt some bread, causing her to fall down a flight of stairs. Yingying suffered serious brain injuries and fell into a coma but Fenghe never left her side. The 24-year-old reportedly spent about 200,000 yuan (HK$42,500) on medical treatment for Yingying and even pledged to take care of her for the rest of his life. His “selfless devotion” was reported by the local media and took social media by storm.

However, it turns out that Fenghe is quite the abusive boyfriend and has threatened Yingying to keep quiet. Fenghe, whose whereabouts are unknown, is now being investigated for serious assault.

Woman pretends to be ‘pregnant’ to smuggle cash into Taiwan

A 34-year-old woman was detained on Monday (Mar 7) at a Taipei airport after she was caught pretending to be pregnant so she could smuggle NT$1.4 million (around S$58,900) into Hong Kong. Dressed in very loose clothing, Ms Chen attracted the attention of security officers who approached her as she was waiting to board her flight at Taoyuan International Airport. Chen was allegedly trembling when she spoke to guards and upon searching, they found the hidden cash in her trousers and jumper. Chen claimed that the money was for shopping. If that’s the truth, that must be one huge shopping spree.

Toddler found hidden in hand luggage on Air France flight

It’s a wonder how the kid escaped detection at the airport. A woman was arrested after a toddler was found hidden in her hand luggage on an Air France flight from Istanbul on Mar 7. The kid was discovered after a fellow passenger noticed something moving inside the cloth bag. Flight attendants requested the woman who was seated near the end of the plane open the bag and a child, believed to be around two years old, was found inside the bag. The woman, a French resident, along with the child were handed over to the French police upon arrival at Paris’ Charles de Galle airport. Turns out that this isn’t the woman’s first attempt at bringing the child back to France. She initially tried to board another flight with the child but was denied access, hence she hid the kid in her hand luggage when she took this flight.

Young Chinese couple sell daughter for iPhone and motorbike

A man has been jailed for selling his 18-day-old daughter so he could buy an iPhone and motorbike. A Duan and Xiaomei, both 19, got together in 2013 but did not marry as they were underage. When they had a child a year later, the unemployed A Duan decided to sell her off as the baby would be a financial burden. Though Xiaomei initially objected to the idea, she gave in and the child was sold for 23,000 yuan (S$4,890) to a buyer he found through an online chat.

Soon after, Xiaomei left A Duan and when she refused to return to him, he turned himself in to the police, who later tracked down Xiaomei. She reportedly told police: “I myself was adopted, and many people in my hometown send their kids to other people to raise them. I really didn’t know that it was illegal.” A Duan was given a three year jail sentence while Xiaomei received a two-and-a-half year suspended sentence, reported the Epoch Times.
