New fitness challenge hits China: iPhone 6 knees

Even before the A4 waist challenge has fizzled, another bizarre “beauty” test has gone viral on social media. Women across China have been scrunching their knees together to measure the beauty of their legs in the iPhone 6 knees challenge. All you have to do is join your knees together and balance an iPhone 6 on top of them. If your kneecaps are covered by the phone - which measures just 13.8cm long - you have slim legs. While photos of women attempting (and failing) the challenge has been getting a lot of attention on Weibo, many have been quick to ridicule the latest fitness challenge. "Was this challenge thought up by some Apple exec?" wondered one netizen, while another joked: “Forget iPhone 6 knees, these are Macbook knees.”

The Internet is going crazy trying to find all 16 tigers

It may be April Fool’s Day but this puzzle is no joke. An optical illusion poster of a family of tigers in the jungle recently resurfaced online and has left netizens scratching their heads. At one glance, there appears to be four tigers – two adults and two cubs – in the painting but actually there are 16 others hiding in the background amongst foliage and trees. Can you spot them? If you give up, click through to the end of this gallery to see the solution.

Chinese marathon runners eat soap by mistake

More than 12,000 runners at last Sunday’s Qingyuan marathon in Guangdong had to seek medical treatment after they ate soap by mistake. After crossing the finishing line, runners were given goodie bags containing soap bars but because the packaging was in English, many assumed the soaps were energy bars and ate them. It also didn’t help that a bunch of grapes was featured on the wrapper. "The packs of soap were indeed like food packaging. It is a negligent mistake on our part," said organisers.

According to the People’s Daily newspaper, many bars with one bite missing dumped at the roadside and more than 12,000 athletes reported problems such as spasms, faintness or stomachaches, though it is not clear how many were the result of them eating the soap. Twenty-three runners were eventually hospitalised, with five in critical condition.

Woman dies after head is stuck in railing

A pregnant woman has died of suffocation after her head got trapped in a railing along a busy road in Xi’an. The woman, who has not been identified, reportedly got her head stuck after she fainted over the railings on Monday (Mar 28). Passers-by tried to rescue her by pulling apart the rails but to no avail. By the time the police and ambulance arrived, she had already had no signs of life. The woman, who was thought to be around 30 years old was seven months’ pregnant with twins, neither of which could be saved. According to an eye witness, the woman looked to be feeling faint and leaned against the railing for support. However, she fainted and her head slipped into rails.

Thai actress advertises herself on billboard in search for husband

Forget Tinder. A Thai actress has taken out a billboard ad in search for Mr Right. The traffic-stopping billboard, which shows television actress Aranya "Pui" Pathumthong dressed in cleavage-baring white lingerie lying with a come-hither look, can be found in Bangkok. “40 and virgin: Pui Aranya is looking for a husband! Let me get it once before I die,” said the ad, which also listed her phone number.

Lest you think this is an April Fool’s joke, a source from Thairath TV says the actress is dead serious. Well, joke or not, the police have ordered the advertising agency responsible to pull the billboard down after photos of it went viral. The agency was also reportedly fined THB500 (S$20) for public obscenity and Aranya will be called up for questioning.

Teacher strips naked and tries to rape student in school

A high school in China’s Guangxi province is in shock after a male teacher stripped naked and tried to rape a female student on campus. The incident took place on Monday (Mar 28) during school hours and was witnessed by several teachers and students. Shocking photos released online showed the naked man grabbing the teen from behind and pushing her against the wall, while students looked on in horror. The assault was foiled when teachers intervened and dragged him off of the girl. The girl was not physically harmed in the attack.

According to a statement by the Publicity Department of Lingshan county, the suspect, surnamed Huo, works as a lab administrator in the school. He was treated for mental illness in 2011 but was deemed mentally stable and returned to work two years later. For the last five years, Huo has displayed no symptoms or signs of his previous mental illness and was not considered a danger to students. Police investigations are ongoing.

EgyptAir hostage takes photo with hijacker

While most would be scared out of their wits, Ben Innes, one of three passengers who were held hostage on an EgyptAir flight on Tuesday (Mar 29) decided he had “nothing to lose anyway” and took a photo with the hijacker. The picture of the grinning Ben next to hijacker Seif Eldin Mustafa, who claimed to be wearing a suicide belt, was taken during the six-hour standoff while the plane was on the runway at Cyprus’ Lanarca airport. “I’m not sure why I did it, I just threw caution to the wind while trying to stay cheerful in the face of adversity. I figured if his bomb was real I’d nothing lose anyway, so took a chance to get a closer look at it.

“I got one of the cabin crew to translate for me and asked him if I could do a selfie with him.

“He just shrugged ‘OK’ so I stood by him and smiled for the camera while a stewardess did the snap. It has to be the best selfie ever,” the 26-year-old Briton said in an interview.

Thankfully, the suicide belt turned out to be fake and the hostages were released before Seif Eldin surrendered.

First-time flyer mistakes plane emergency exit for toilet

A 50-year-old woman has been detained after she accidentally opened the emergency exit of a China Southern Airlines plane on Saturday (Mar 26). The first-time flyer was fed up with the wait for the toilet and went in search for another lavatory but ended up opening the emergency exit and deploying the evacuation slide instead, Chinese media reported. The incident, which happened at the airport in Chongqing as the plane prepared for take-off, caused the flight to be delayed by two hours. The woman’s boarding pass and passport were confiscated by cabin crew and she was later taken away by police.

Arline passenger wears all his clothes to avoid baggage fee

The things people do to save money. A British passenger was so appalled that he had to pay 45 pounds (S$90) to check in an additional bag on his easyJet flight from London to Reykjavik, Iceland, that he emptied its contents and wore all of his clothes. Sure Matt Botten, 32, looked ridiculous with layers of T-shirts, jumpers and trousers as well as a shoe in each pocket of his pants, and had to spend an extra 30 minutes being questioned by suspicious security staff, but don’t you love it when people stand up to rip-offs? Proud of the achievement, Matt, who was travelling with his girlfriend, wrote on Facebook: “We're going to Iceland baby!... And how to do it in a financially frugal manner, without having to stump up forty five quid for a hold bag? Simply by wearing everything I own.” Matt 1, easyJet 0.
