Woman names baby ‘Jet Star’ after giving birth on flight

A mother who unexpectedly gave birth to a baby boy on a Jetstar flight from Singapore to Yangon last Friday (April 22) has named her son after the airline as a tribute to the crew who helped deliver the child. According to the airline, flight 3K583 had just landed in Yangon when Saw Ler Htu, a Myanmar national, went into labour. With the help of the crew and three doctors on board, Saw Jet Star was safely delivered. The six pound, seven ounce (around 2.9kg) boy is the first baby to be delivered on a Jetstar Asia flight and the airline will be contributing S$1,000 worth of baby supplies to the family.

Uber driver Shirwin Eu's wife stands up for her man

Instead of facepalming, the wife of Uber driver Shirwin Eu, who tried running as an independent candidate in the Bukit Batok by-election, has applauded her man for “going ahead even knowing the odds (sic)". Though the 32-year-old failed to qualify to contest in the by-election - he did not have any assentors or the election deposit of S$13,500 - he turned up at the Nomination Centre on Wednesday hoping he would be given a waiver.

In a Facebook post, Mrs Eu said everyone should be given equal opportunities in a democratic society, and not just those with money and “who know 10 people from the community”.

“An election should be like a job interview, you present yourself and let the interviewer decide to employ you or not,” she wrote. “Do we have to place a deposit and get 10 supporters behind us when we go for job interviews? An interview as it is, does not guarantee a job but we present our best during the interview and hope for the best. Although many times, in an interview we get nervous and say the wrong things, but at least we try!”

Shirwin has been called a laughing stock by netizens after he told the media he wanted to become an MP for the “fame and wealth of this job prospect”.

Outrage as looters snatch water left for London marathon runners

Chaos descended on the London marathon last Sunday (Apr 24) as looters raided a refreshment area during the race and stole bottled water meant for runners. According to the Daily Mail, residents, including parents with children, were seen brazenly grabbing the bottles at around the 12km part of the race in Deptford, south-east London, after the front runners had passed through.

Shocking photos and videos posted online showed some even came with trolleys and helped themselves to cartons of refreshments as volunteers looked on helplessly. Race organisers said volunteers were advised not to intervene in such situations and have launched a full investigation.

Man “pregnant” for 12 years with 15kg tumour

A Chinese man, who let a stomach tumour grow for 12 years until it left him looking heavily pregnant, has finally undergone surgery to remove it. Zhang Cheng (not his real name), 33, first discovered the benign tumour in 2004 but could not afford surgery to have it removed. Zhang had hoped it could be cured with traditional remedies but it just kept growing - it weighed a whopping 15kg at its heaviest - pressing on his internal organs for years. Eventually, he raised enough money and the growth was removed in a six-hour long operation carried out by experts from three clinical departments. No word on whether the tumour was a boy or a girl.

Malaysian farmer shocked by birth of goat with human face

A Malaysian farmer was shocked to find that one of his goats had given birth to a kid with the face of a human infant. The goat, which was born in Felda Sungai Mas, had a face, nose, and short legs and did not last long after its birth. Despite its human features, the newborn did not have an umbilical cord.

Farmer Ibrahim Basir told the media he had received offers to buy the carcass but decided to hand it over to the Veterinary Services Department to carry out an investigation, which includes the possibility of whether the mother goat was violated by a human.

Man steals women’s shoes for the smell

The "owner" of this shoe collection is no Carrie Bradshaw. Instead, this is the loot of a Hubei thief with a disturbing shoe fetish. A 33-year-old man was arrested last Tuesday (Apr 18) for stealing more than 160 pairs of women’s shoes. He wasn't attracted to their designs or stealing for kicks, but was obsessed with their odour - apparently it makes him “happy”. Don't ask.

According to Chinese media reports, the serial thief, surnamed Yang, had been stealing the shoes of female employees working at a company near where he lived. Yang reportedly preyed on shoes that were left out on the sidewalk and was very careful to avoid detection after a surveillance camera was installed. And when the supply of footwear ran low, he turned to stealing the women’s clothes and underwear. It was only after the company turned to the police for help that Yang was caught red handed. Another 159 pairs were found in his home, tucked under the bed, in the closet and on the balcony.

Popular Egyptian puppet sued for indecency

2016 has sure been a tough year for dolls. Just months after a Saudi Arabia mascot was arrested for “showing skin”, now another “doll” is also in hot water for “indecency”. Popular puppet Abla Fahita, a widow who enjoys taking sexy selfies in lingerie and mocking Egypt’s politicians, has been charged with defying “the values and ethics of Egypt” after making sexual innuendo jokes on her satirical television show Live From The Duplex. Lawyer Samir Sabry accused the puppet of taking the joke too far after she was featured posing with a copy of Fifty Shades of Grey. The case will be heard in court on June 26.

Midwife rides inflatable swan during flood to deliver baby

The streets in Houston may be waist-deep in water but that wasn’t going to stop midwife Cathy Rude from getting to her labouring patient. Last week, the 63-year-old hitched a ride on an inflatable swan to get to her patient who had been having contractions for several days. In her 24 years of midwifery, Cathy had waded through floodwaters to deliver babies but never in waters as deep as the recent flood. “Midwives will do anything to get to a birth!” wrote Cathy in Facebook. Now that’s dedication.

Pedicure tights are the latest craze in Japan

Want to wear open toe shoes but are too lazy to paint your nails? Well now you don’t have to with these bizarre toenail stockings. Invented in Japan by Belle Maison, they come in a variety of colours and designs – some even come with 3D embellishments - printed on the toenail portion of the stockings. They may be cheaper and last longer than a pedicure, but we can already foresee adjusting the ten toes so they sit perfectly over the nails all day will be a b*tch.
