China denies selling human meat to African supermarkets

China has been forced to deny claims that it is packaging human meat as corned beef and selling them to African supermarkets after a hoax went viral. Rumours began circulating after a Facebook post by user Barbara Akosua Aboagye featuring images of supposedly skinned humans went viral earlier this month. The allegations were reported by African press and some even speculated that China was exporting human meat because it had ran out of space to dispose of its dead.

“Today a local tabloid newspaper is openly spreading a rumour, claiming that the Chinese use human meat to make corned beef and sell it to Africa,' said China's ambassador to Zambia Yang Youming. “This is completely a malicious slandering and vilification which is absolutely unacceptable to us. We hereby express our utmost anger and the strongest condemnation over such an act.”

While the photos fooled many, hoax-busing website Snopes pointed out that the images of the skinned human came from a 2012 marketing campaign for the video game Resident Evil 6

No hotel room? No problem. Tourists spend the night in HK ATM stall

Two tourists photographed spending the night in an ATM stall in Hong Kong has drawn the ire of netizens. The photo, which shows two women sleeping on newspapers spread on the floor with their luggage tucked in a corner, went viral after it was uploaded on Facebook on Sunday morning (May 15). A netizen surnamed Wong said he was planning to withdraw money from the Wing Lung Bank ATM at around 4am when he encountered the sleeping beauties.

Many Hong Kong netizens criticised their inconsiderate behaviour, while others noted that the ATM stall was a “good” spot to spend the night as there was air-conditioning and security cameras to protect their belongings. The bank said it is looking into the case and will increase the frequency of on-site inspections to prevent the incident from happening again.

McDonald’s new burger is red hot

Crazy coloured burgers, which have taken the fast food industry by storm, have finally “flown” into Singapore. McDonald’s on Wednesday introduced the Super Red burger to mark the Angry Birds’ movie release. Inspired by the leader of Angry Birds flock, Red, the limited-edition burger, which features flaming-red buns with a smoky chicken patty, sliced tomato and egg, topped with a pepper mayo sauce, is a bit on the spicy side, but we would have it any day over these bizarre rose-flavoured buns. While McDonald’s did not reveal what gives the buns its scarlet hue, let’s hope it doesn’t give us side effects like neon poop.

McDonald’s customer suffers organ damage after drinking tainted beverage

A McDonald’s customer has suffered organ damage after consuming a beverage that could have been laced with disinfectant. According to local reports, the man, known by his surname Feng, had ordered a hot chocolate for his four-year-old son at a McDonald’s outlet in Chongqing, China, on Monday. However, after taking a sip, the boy refused to finish the drink. When Feng took a gulp, his tongue turned numb and his throat stared burning. It was only after confronting the workers about the drink that Feng learnt that it could have been contaminated.

Turns out that the workers had been cleaning the kitchen and one of them poured disinfectant into a boiler to clean it. The liquid in the boiler was later accidentally used to make Feng’s drink. Feng and his son were rushed to a hospital where he had his stomach pumped. He was later told that his liver and stomach may be damaged. The fast-food chain said it would take full responsibility for the incident.

Star Wars fan arrested for dressing as Stormtrooper

A US man was arrested for wearing a Stormtrooper costume while walking the streets of a small town in Georgia on Sunday. According to media reports, Justin Marling’s full armour and plastic gun created concern and it didn’t help that when cops told him to put down his weapon, he ignored them and walked away. Turns out Justin was only trying to raise awareness for a charitable cause: Star Wars Force for Change, which aims to inspire positive impact on the world. Justin was charged with reckless misconduct and wearing a mask, which is illegal under Georgia law, unless it is for a holiday or special event.
