NTUC FairPrice claims rat whistleblower is delivery man

Supermarket operator NTUC FairPrice on Thursday said it would take “necessary actions to protect their reputation” if Facebook user Sun Yu Ming, who posted a viral video and photos of a rat in its Kang Kar Mall outlet, did not stop making “inflammatory remarks”.

In a post on its Facebook page, Fairprice identified Sun as a delivery person for bread at its Kang Kar outlet, who had been reported in the past to have “short-changed” the store of their bread. It added that the video was taken while he was replenishing stocks and that investigations “show that the source of the pest did not originate from within store”. Nevertheless, the company said it will continue to take proactive preventive measures to address the pest incident.

On Wednesday, Sun shared that he spotted rats in the bread section of the supermarket and complained of inaction by Fairprice staff when he raised the issue with them. Following an inspection at the outlet, the National Environment Agency (NEA) said it will be taking action against the management of NTUC FairPrice.

Internet personality slammed for having meal on subway “to gain fame”

Some people will do anything for fame. An aspiring internet personality in China has come under fire for setting up a folding table and having a meal on the subway last Saturday (May 29), a stunt he staged purely “to gain fame”, said Chinese media reports. A photo went of two men seated on the floor of a carriage chomping on eggs and peanuts during rush hour in the Guangzhou subway went viral.

One of the guys was later identified as "Limouge," a host of a number of Chinese live-streaming sites, and he admitted that he pulled the stunt in hope of becoming famous. Unsurprisingly, most netizens were not amused, with thousands labelling the behaviour as “selfish” and “uncivilised”. "What a selfish online host. In your stunt, you show no concern for the other people that have to be on the train with you," commented one netizen on Weibo.

"How disgusting, some people will do anything to get famous," said another. Fortunately, the duo weren’t allowed to carry on their shenanigans for very long as they were kicked off the train by metro staff.

Kid destroys LEGO sculpture an hour after exhibit opens

Now you see it, now you don’t. Just one hour after the LEGO show in Ningbo, China, opened on Sunday, the human-size figurine of Nick Wilde, a character from popular movie "Zootopia", was destroyed. The fox figurine, which artist Mr Zhao spent three days and nights painstakingly putting together, was worth more than 100,000 yuan (approximately S$20,900).

According to reports, shortly after the show opened to public, a young boy climbed under the ropes surrounding the exhibit for a photo and knocked down the sculpture. As the piece was only partially glued together, it could not be easily reconstructed. Though Zhao was heartbroken, he did not blame the kid as “a child couldn’t really comprehend the cost of such an accident” and will not be seeking compensation for the damages.

Man gets head stuck in washing machine

A man in Fuzhou had to be rescued by firefighters after his head got trapped in a washing machine on Sunday while he was trying to fix it. Apparently, he was unable to turn on the machine to wash his clothes so he stuck his head in to check if something was stuck at the bottom. “My head could go into the machine very easily, so I don't understand why I got stuck on the way out,” he lamented.

Fortunately, his roommates came home and called the fire department. Firefighters had to use power tools to break open the drum and he was pulled out in less than an hour.

Kangaroo ruptures woman’s breast implants during attack

A woman has to undergo surgery to get her breast implants replaced after they exploded when a kangaroo jumped at her in South Australia last week. Sharon Heinrich, 45, was cycling with her friend on the Riesling Trail when the animal jumped from a ledge onto the two women. “'I thought "he's cute" and then he jumped on top of me and used me to launch off and on to my girlfriend,” said Sharon.

Apart from the ruptured implants, Sharon also suffered cracked ribs and internal injuries, though she noted her injuries could be a lot worse if it weren’t for the implants: “They acted as air bags.” Heinrich’s friend, however, wasn’t so lucky. She suffered a concussion and whiplash. Guess the kangaroo isn’t so cute now huh?

Woman barred from flight because she was in “inappropriate” shorts

A dancer was barred from her JetBlue flight from Boston on May 18 as she was deemed “inappropriately” dressed. Their beef? Her stripy short shorts. Burlesque performer Maggie McMuffin, who was waiting for her connecting flight to Seattle, said the flight crew approached her and politely told her she had to put on something else or she would not be allowed on the flight. With no other clothes on her, she had no choice but to buy a pair of sleep shorts for US$22 to make the flight.

According to her friend Molly McIsaac, who later tweeted about Maggie's ordeal, “no explanation was given except that the pilot said that her clothes would prevent her boarding the plane”. The post added that the airline has apologised for the incident and refunded Maggie for the flight and the cost of the shorts. A JetBlue spokesman explained that the crew discussed and determined that the shorts may offend other families on the flight, and that the airline “supports its crewmembers’ discretion to make these difficult decisions”.

Man allowed to pay child support in pizza

A divorced father has been told he can pay child support to his ex-wife - with pizza. The man, an Italian pizza chef, agreed to pay 300 euro (around S$460) a month for the couple's eldest daughter, when they split in 2002. However, when the recession hit in 2008, the father could no longer afford the cash payment and instead offered to pay the equivalent sum in the form of pizzas from his business. But after a while, the mother grew sick of the food and took the 50-year-old to court in 2010. However, the judge ruled in the father's favour because he didn't earn enough to keep up the payments, said media reports.
