New dog grooming trend in Taiwan: Squareheads and afros

Taiwan dog lovers take their furkids’ looks so seriously that they have taken to giving them afros and perfectly square cuts (inspired by Japan’s ToFu Oyaku characters perhaps?) to help them stand out on social media.

The peculiar trend for pups was started by pet groomers and are only suitable for certain breeds - you need a whole lot of fur around the face to perfect these avant garde dos.

So what’s next? A triangle do?

Foreign worker climbs block to save stuck toddler

Two foreign workers have been hailed heroes after they rescued a toddler who was stuck between the rails outside a flat on Thursday (Apr 23).

The girl’s head was trapped in between rails of a clothes drying rack and was hanging precariously from a ledge on the second floor of an HDB block at Jurong East Avenue 1.

S Shammugun Nathan (left) climbed onto the ledge Spiderman-style while his colleague  P Muthukumar climbed over the railings to help him. They were able to free the girl within minutes.

The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) arrived at the scene five minutes later and brought the girl to safety.  The men were both lauded by SCDF on Friday.

Woman accidentally throws bag containing more than S$10,000

A woman learnt an expensive lesson when she accidentally threw out a bag containing some 47,000 yuan (S$10,200).

35-year-old Lin Xin Hua, a Chinese national, had been pleading with her 6-year-old daughter to go to bed in the early hours of Sunday morning (Apr 19) but to no avail.

Frustrated, she started to hit her daughter who ran out of the house. As Lin gave chase, she grabbed a plastic bag from the table and threw it at her but it went over the 13th floor parapet of her block at New Upper Changi Road and onto the ground floor.

A neighbour claimed that she saw a man in his 20s picking up the bag, which contained money for Lin’s daughter’s education and their living expenses. Lin has made a police report and investigations are ongoing.

While many netizens were skeptical of her “sob story”, others were more “disturbed” by her behaviour towards her daughter and said she should be fined for high rise littering.

“It's hard to believe her story I must say. Well another problem that she creates - killer litter and child abuse. Thank God nobody was hurt when she threw the heavy bag. Poor child being abused by mum,” wrote Sheila Hassan on Facebook.

“Hmmm....'she started to hit her ', 'girl ran out of the house' and 'she threw items at her'....frankly to me, these are more disturbing to read than that 10k,” commented Thilaga Kumar.

Thai couple freeze 2-year-old daughter

A two-year-old Thai girl who died from a brain tumour has become the youngest person to be cryonically frozen in the hope she will one day be revived by advances in science.

Last April, two-year-old Matheryn Naovaratpong failed to wake up from her sleep and doctors found a 11cm tumour in the left side of her brain. She was diagnosed with ependymoblastoma, a rare form of brain cancer that afflicts the very young.

After months of intensive treatments and surgeries, the toddler died on January 8 and her brain and central nervous system are now preserved at a cryonic facility in Arizona.

Her family hopes future advances in medical science will generate a cure for her cancer and regenerate a new body, and is preparing videos to explain to the girl what happened in the past.

I hope the future world will take care of her, said Matheryn’s father.

Kim Jong Un scales “highest” mountain in North Korea

Who needs boots when you can scale North Korea’s highest peak in leather shoes and an overcoat?

Photos showing the country’s leader Kim Jong Un all smiles on the top of the Mount Paektu after “climbing” the 9,000 feet high mountain were released by North Korean state media this week. Speaking with troops on the snow-capped mountain, Kim reportedly said that the climb had given him mental energy “more powerful than nuclear weapons”.

This alleged feat is the latest of a series of bizarre claims about the 32-year-old ruler. Earlier this month, a new teacher’s manual claimed that Kim learned to drive when he was three years old and raced a yacht when he was nine.
