10 real-life boyfriends and girlfriends who are worse than your terrible ex

Nothing makes us forget our bad breakups like reading about other people’s romantic misfortunes. Inspired by the man caught with 17 girlfriends at the hospital and the groom who tried to drown himself after meeting his "ugly" bride, we’ve rounded up the relationship mishaps that will make you feel better about your own.

1. Man jumps to his death after girlfriend refuses to stop shopping

It’s not unusual to see men waiting impatiently for their lady friends to finish shopping, but one man in China took his annoyance to the next level by jumping from the seventh floor of the Golden Eagle Shopping Complex after his girlfriend made too many expensive purchases. Sadly, he did not survive the impact.

A woman from China plastered her boyfriend’s rented car with sanitary napkins after she suspected him of cheating, only to find out later that the reason he hadn’t come home was that he was planning a surprise party for her. Oops.

Li Tan, 23, from China, went as far as to post photos of her handiwork online, ignoring her friend’s advice to give the guy the benefit of a doubt. Luckily, the shocked De Wu, 24, was able to produce proof of his innocence when he returned home: reservations to a fancy restaurant, plus arrangements for all of her friends to show up for the gathering.

We know it sounds terrible, but we’re with the bride on this one. The family of Lovely Singh’s fiancé assured her that she was marrying an educated man, so imagine her surprise when she realised – right before walking down the aisle – that he couldn’t even add 15 and six (his answer: “17”). Singh’s family later found out that the man was illiterate, driving her to call off their arrangement altogether.

“Catfishing” might be a common internet woe, but only a few people would find the experience worthy of police intervention. A Chinese woman residing in Korea paid a surprise visit to her online boyfriend in China, only to call the cops when she realised that he looked nothing like his photos. Well, okay, she called them after demanding that he reimburse the fare for a round trip (apparently, she hadn’t counted on needing to fly back home). The woman not only got her money back, but the police even convinced her (ex)-boyfriend to repay her for the gift she had bought him.

5. Woman dumps man for being too romantic, man shows up at her door covered in firecrackers

A 35-year-old man in China was heartbroken after his girlfriend left him for another man, having grown tired of his overly romantic gestures (flowers, chocolates, poetry....).  He tried winning her back with poetry, but when that failed, he showed up in front of her parents’ house wearing a garland of firecrackers. Of course, he was arrested, and now faces up to three years in jail for endangering people’s lives.

6. Man crowdfunds trip so he can chaperone his girlfriend while she’s holidaying

Talk about possessive: A 25-year-old man from Maryland, USA, started a GoFundMe page to raise money so that he could follow his girlfriend to Miami, where she was off vacationing with her girlfriends. In the page, obnoxiously titled “Save My Relationship”, the man wrote, “If you know anything about Miami, you know that she shouldn’t go without a chaperone. I need to get there to be with her and share this joyous time but my funds have been exhausted….”

Lest you think this is just about a guy missing his beloved, the man went on to tell The Washington Post that he felt uncomfortable about her Instagram photos, saying, “She clearly needs me… I can tell the Miami sun is doing exactly what I thought it would do… Help.”

Obnoxiously enough, he actually made his target, declaring “Love conquers all!” in the page’s description.

7. Chinese man shoves girlfriend down a manhole

A CCTV camera in Haikou, China, captured video of a man shoving his girlfriend, umbrella and all, down an uncovered manhole before covering the opening with a piece of cardboard. The woman was rescued only 60 hours later, when onlookers found her naked and scared, having attempted to create a ladder out of her clothes. While we don’t know why the man tried to murder her, the fact that he owed her quite a bit of money might have something to do with it.

Heads ups, guys: Before buying your girlfriend breast implants, find out if she even wants them in the first place. A 26-year-old man in China learned his lesson the hard way when he led his girlfriend into a cosmetic surgery clinic on her birthday, only to end up with a punched head and a bruised groin after she realised what was happening. The man’s friend, who’d been recruited to take photos of the “happy” occasion, said that the girl had never felt so insulted, and that if he didn’t like the size of her breasts, he could move on. The boyfriend replied that they were fine, but he thought she might enjoy bigger ones. Of course, the girl didn’t take this lying down and dumped him on the spot.

9. Boyfriend refuses to share salsa, gets stabbed

A 50-year-old woman from Akron, Ohio, allegedly stabbed her boyfriend in the stomach because he refused to stop eating their salsa. When she told him he was eating too much, he ignored her. The next thing he knew, she was stabbing him in the hip with a pen. She knocked over their TV, and when he got up to catch it, she jammed a kitchen knife into his stomach. Police found the man clutching his stomach outside while the woman made a quick getaway.

10. Woman stabs husband with a squirrel for not buying beer

Okay, okay, it was a ceramic squirrel, but this headline – which inspired chuckles when it circled the world in 2013 – is too good to pass up. A 44-year-old woman from South Carolina was accused of stabbing her husband with a ceramic squirrel on Christmas Eve when he failed to come home with any beer. The man had gone out to buy beer earlier that evening, but returned empty-handed after realising that all of the stores were closed. So while he was eating a sandwich, his wife knocked him with a ceramic squirrel from behind, and stabbed him in the chest with it. The man quickly called the cops, who found him cut, bloodied, and wounded with a large gash under his shirt.
