What makes someone a "keeper"?

Back in 2000, Mel Gibson (that’s a name we haven’t heard in a while) gave insight as to what the fairer gender is thinking with his romantic comedy, What Women Want. The men have their answers, and now it’s time the women got theirs. Here are some things that men are looking for in a long term relationship.

From changing a blown lightbulb, fixing up that new dining table, to even being the valiant hero when a cockroach comes scuttling into your path (even if they are scared to death by it), the man in your life wants to feel needed by you. They’re probably all for gender equality, but secretly, he still wants to show you some good old fashioned chivalry, to protect and provide for you.

Nothing turns a man off more than a constantly needy other half who requires attention 24/7 – that’s hardly a desirable trait. Men want a woman who can be her own person, who has dreams and ambitions, and who can give him the space and support to be his own man as well. After all, a healthy relationship doesn’t mean being joined at the hip, and having some absence does make the heart grow fonder…

Women find conversation essential in a relationship, so it may be shocking to know that it’s not a requirement for men. Unlike women, men are practical creatures who just need their basic needs met for a happy life. They don’t talk about feelings simply because they don’t need to, and as conversation requires effort, most have a subconscious ‘word quota’ for the day. Oh, and never force a man to talk seriously when he’s tired. It’s a fruitless effort that might escalate into a completely unnecessary argument.

No matter their age, there’ll always be another love in your man’s life vying for his attention – a car, his Xbox, or even a favourite pastime. Even if you can’t understand it, indulge him. Give him time and space to pursue his wakeboarding interests, and actually pay attention when he goes into a monologue about car specs. He doesn’t need you to actually get involved, but it would mean the world to him to have your acceptance and support.

The last thing a man wants is to be tiptoeing around an emotional minefield, wondering whether his next word or action will set you off. As we have earlier established, men aren’t as in tune with their feelings, which might often result in them reading your supposedly obvious signals wrongly, or just saying the wrong things. They usually don’t mean what you think they mean, so ladies, try to be kind.

Your man wants someone who can love him uncontionally. He wants someone who accepts him when he’s being a goofball, who laughs at his bad jokes, and someone who will still love him to bits even after a loud fart. Men don’t want their relationship to feel like a therapy session; they want to feel like they’re good enough for you, and to be loved for who they really are.

It’s no big secret that men are visual creatures. They love admiring beautiful things, so it helps when their other half tries to dress up and look good for them when they are dating, and even well into married life. Of course, he also knows that superficial beauty may hold his attention for a period of time, but true inner beauty – a loving personality and a positive attitude – is what will really keep him by a woman’s side ‘til death do they part.

When you’re up there reciting those vows, you’ll want the person opposite to mean it as much as you do when you promise to be true “in sickness and in health, for richer or poorer, better or worse”. There’s no greater comfort than knowing that you have somebody who’s truly got your back – and is there for the long haul. And that’s what every man wants.
