TRAVEL PHILOSOPHY: “Have fun and take nice pictures. Basically, I will do anything for a nice photo (laughs). I don’t mind trekking a long way just to capture nice scenery.”

RESEARCH OR WING IT? “It depends on who I’m going with. When I went to Hongkong with my family, I did most of the planning. If I travel with my husband, he usually does most of the planning. When I was in France last year with [fashion blogger] Andrea Chong, I let her do all the planning ’cos I’ve never been there but she has.”

TOURIST SPOTS OR OFF-THE-BEATEN TRACK? “Both. When I visit a country I’ve never been to before, I’d visit all the touristy places, put them up on Instagram and tag the places. I must tell people that I’ve been there (laughs). But if, say, I’m on a drive and I see a very nice place, I don’t mind getting out of the car and walking a little bit [to check it out].”

(Pictured above) Nice view: Nurul in Monaco last October. Ladies, if this picturesque scenery isn’t enough to lure you to this city steeped in history, retail therapy just might. “Shopping in Monaco is super-cheap, and we get tax refunds. So I shopped like mad at places like YSL and Chanel.”

MY 48-HOUR GETAWAY: “Krabi in Thailand or Redang Island in Malaysia for snorkelling and diving. I love beach holidays and anything to do with sea activities ’cos [the sea] really calms me. I get to enjoy the sea, sun, sand, and seafood.”

BEEN THERE, DONE THAT: “In 2012, I went whale watching with my family in Australia’s Gold Coast. We were very lucky. We saw a few whales that were very far away but there was one that swam right below and then to the side of our boat. It was huge and it was spraying water [out of its blowhole]. For a moment, I was very scared that the whale was going to flip our boat over (laughs). We also saw many dolphins everywhere.”

THIS HAPPENED TO ME: “During my trip to Perth in 2009, I took along mashed potatoes to eat on the flight. I didn’t know that the Australian Customs are so strict about bringing food into the country. I had ticked on the declaration form that I didn’t have any food items ’cos I didn’t think much of it. When we got off the flight and they found my mashed potatoes, they suspected I was bringing in something [illegal] and so they checked my luggage. They called the police and I was detained for about six hours. They put me in an interrogation room and kept asking me the same questions — like what I was doing in Perth and where I was staying — over and over again. Then they said they were taking me to court the next day. I kept crying and begging them, saying that I was not a criminal. They finally let me go, but I had to pay AUD$200 (S$204). That was really traumatic.”

THIS HAPPENED TO ME PART II: “I was in France with Andrea and another friend for a Bioderma press trip. We extended our trip by four days, rented a car and drove from Cannes to Marseille. At Marseille, Andrea said we should go on a boat ride to check out the coastal areas. It turned out to be the boat ride to hell. I filmed a video of us looking very glam when we got on the boat, and another one of us screaming for our dear lives. We were on a speedboat and the waters were so choppy that even our undergarments were soaked and our make-up ruined. It was so bad that we were thrown off our seats and our friend accidentally popped her pimple on her face (laughs). We really thought we were going to die ’cos the speedboat was going super-fast and we were in the middle of the ocean and didn’t have any life jackets on. The boat ride lasted three hours. By the time we reached the port, it looked like we just went for a dip in the ocean. We were shaking and trembling as we walked back [to our hotel] in our super-wet clothes (laughs).”

NEXT DESTINATION: “I’d love to go to New York. I’m more of a beach holiday person but I really want to know what it’s like to be there. And I hear the shopping is really good.”

Maldives (above): “Waking up every morning to the view of the ocean in Maldives was fantastic. And the food was really good. We got a buffet spread for breakfast, lunch, dinner and supper, and we could just go in and eat anytime. Snorkelling there was very, very nice. It was the perfect getaway.”

Monaco: “Every corner in Monaco is Insta-worthy. The scenery and architecture is gorgeous. The people in Monaco are very friendly and you can speak to them in English.”
