The radio producer-presenter has a tough time looking for pictures of her travels ’cos she doesn’t like taking holiday photos — she much prefers to be ‘in the moment’

TRAVEL PHILOSOPHY: “Surprise yourself. I’ve been on an adrenalin-seeking phase and I’m actually surprised by the amount of courage I’ve been able to summon.”

RESEARCH OR WING IT? “I like to wring as much fun out of every second on holiday as I can. So, I approach a holiday like I’m planning to go to war. I get very intense about what [activity] to fit into every day, where to stay, what to eat…”

THE PACKING LIST: “I’d like to think that I travel light but inevitably I end up with at least two small carry-ons no matter where I go. There is the emergency gi (martial arts uniform) in case I find a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu gym I have to enroll in. The emergency three books, in case my iPad dies and my library ‘disappears’ — I’m a book nut. The emergency warm jacket even if I’m in Phuket, where it once rained for a week and I used that jacket and felt snug and smug. I’m very big on planning for emergencies.”

WINDOW OR AISLE? “Aisle. I can’t stand hemming and hawing at the window seat looking over a sleeping passenger and then, eventually, doing a standing broad jump over him because my bladder just can’t wait for Mr Sleepy to wake up.”

MY 48-HOUR GETAWAY: “Soi Tai Ead, aka Muay Thai Street, in Phuket. I headed there to train in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu twice last year. It is a place for people who want to eat well, sleep early and train like mad.”

LONE WOLF OR WOLF PACK? “Lone wolf. I like my alone time, so paring a group down to nil is sometimes great for the soul. Also, I never take pictures while on holiday because I prefer to be in the moment. [Because] when you are with a group, inevitably, someone wants a pose-y picture every other second.”

STAY CONNECTED OR OFF THE GRID? “I get cranky if I don’t have access to the endless library that is the Internet.”

(Pictured above) From a view to a chill: A sweeping shot of the Andaman Ocean in Phuket. “Unless I take in the view of an endless horizon from a stretch of beach, it doesn’t seem like a holiday,” says Michelle. “On my last break, I spent many happy days face-down, snorkelling in the Andaman Ocean.”

BEEN THERE, DONE THAT: “A visit to Chimelong Ocean Kingdom, where guests at the 1888-room Henqin Bay Hotel — the largest in mainland China — can wade up close with dolphins at an underwater facility, take in a jaw-dropping Cirque Du Soleil-esque circus, and gape at whale sharks in an indoor aquarium. That was part of a trip that included strolling in Macau and hiking the Forbidden Wall of the Great Wall in Beijing.”

THIS HAPPENED TO ME: “Once, I missed a connecting flight to Cypress and was stranded in Bahrain for two nights with only the clothes on my back because everything else was checked-in and had gone on before me. That was not fun.”

NEXT DESTINATION: “Japan in winter where the plan is to watch snow fall while submersed in a hot spring, drinking warm sake that is floated traditionally towards you.”

(Pictured above) Awesome: At China’s Chimelong Ocean Park, you can watch dolphins play or a freakish circus show featuring performers from over 15 countries.

Guangdong, China: “Unleash your inner child in the wonderland that is Chimelong Ocean Kingdom in Zhuhai. It took sheer guts to get on the Parrot Coaster, the world’s longest and fastest wing coaster with a zero-gravity roll from a height of 50m. The ride stretches 1,278m and reaches speeds of 108 km/h. I rode it for at least three times and always emerged with spaghetti legs.”
