TRAVEL PHILOSOPHY: “Go ahead and wander. You’ll find new directions to your destination, become more brave and explore more.”

RESEARCH OR WING IT? “I’d book my accommodation first for sure. I could maybe go with the flow for my itinerary.”

THE PACKING LIST: “Phone lor. And lip balm. It’s pretty useful; you can even apply on your face when it feels dry. I’m quite low maintenance overseas. If I’m in Bangkok, I’ll just wear T-shirt, shorts and slippers ’cos it’s just so hot.”

AISLE OR WINDOW SEAT? “Window. I like to look at the moving clouds and let my thoughts flow along with them. Generally, I like to relax by looking at the sky.”

LONE WOLF OR WOLF PACK? “I like travelling alone. When you’re with friends, you won’t go out of your comfort zone ’cos there’s always someone who will do the problem-solving. You also tend not to try new things. When you’re by yourself, you’re more likely to seek something thrilling!”

INTO THE WOODS OR BIG CITY LIFE? “Nature. I find watching sunrise and sunset very relaxing. In Singapore you can’t really do that ’cos there are construction sites everywhere.”

STAY CONNECTED OR OFF THE GRID? “I’ll check my phone, ’cos sometimes my manager texts me about work. But I tend to check my messages only when I’m back [from my trip].”

BEEN THERE, DONE THAT:“I’ve always wanted to go on a road trip. [Chen] Liping jie and I, and two of our friends recently went to Tasmania and Melbourne together. We spent most of our time there on the road, driving from Hobart to Cradle Mountain. There was a bush fire at Cradle Mountain while we were there, so the sky was very grey and gloomy. Out of the 13 days there, we only saw blue skies for about two days. We couldn’t even see any stars at night. I think we were there at the wrong time! We were also supposed to visit this beautiful lavender farm at Bridport. We were surprised when we arrived — the lavender had all been harvested and the fields looked chao tah (burnt in Hokkien). And we had even dressed up for photos! (Laughs) We were so disappointed.”

THIS HAPPENED TO ME: “In 2012, I went to Jeju Island alone. I was in Seoul visiting my Korean friend, and booked an impromptu trip to Jeju for the very next day. I didn’t do my homework or book any accommodations, so I just asked random strangers there for directions to a guesthouse. It turned out to be fully booked. I was just sitting at the lobby thinking of a solution when I heard a Singaporean-sounding voice saying, ‘Where are we going later hah?’ It was as if my guardian angel had appeared! I approached them, “Hey, you’re from Singapore, right? Me too, leh. Can I bunk in with you?” But they had no space in their room. In the end, I managed to find lodging at a backpacker’s hostel. But I got to hang out with them for the next few days ’cos it was cheaper to share a cab. Next time, I’ll be sure to do my research [before going on a trip].”

MY 48-HOUR GETAWAY: “I’ll just stay at home and sleep! Or I’ll do some hiking at the TreeTop Walk at MacRitchie Reservoir. Two days is too short to go anywhere. Even if I have a staycation with my friends, I’d just drink some wine and sleep. Now I sound like an old lady, right? (Laughs)”

NEXT DESTINATION: “I wanted to go to the Gold Coast, but was too busy filming. I wanted to visit Finland to see the Northern Lights too. Everybody is rushing there now ’cos the lights are supposed to go dim after this year! But I don’t think I’ll have the chance. My filming schedule’s packed all the way till next year, and I don’t have a long break in between. You’ll need at least two weeks there. Anyway, I have a phobia of going to natural attractions now. What if the weather turns out bad like Tasmania?!”

Yahui says go here…

(Left) TASMANIA, AUSTRALIA: “Tracy [Lee] went to Tasmania after my trip and she said the weather there was nice. I was like, ‘Thanks Tracy, that was real encouraging.’ (Laughs) It is a nice place for a holiday. Just don’t plan to stay too long there. It’s a bit too quiet, so one week there is just nice.”

(Right) ZHANGJIAJIE, CHINA: “My parents have been meaning to go there, but I haven’t been. If you Google it, you’ll see that it’s a beautiful place with natural scenery. If I can’t go to Finland, I think Zhangjiajie is a good alternative. (laughs)”
